This 1980 article tells a great story about Workers' Owned Sewing Company in Windsor, NC. WOSC started in 1979 and operated for a couple decades as a majority Black worker co-op in rural eastern North Carolina. It wasn't easy. "Outside Bertie County and eastern North Carolina $3.10 per hour sounds pretty poor for a worker-owned coop, especially since the stock may never bring great financial dividends. But in Bertie County, with few industrial jobs existing, especially...

"Probably the most important thing we do for people is to have them participate in an actual democratic experience – a ripe experience where people are free to talk and make decisions, where there is no discrimination, and where their experience is valued. If you don’t value a person’s experiences, I don’t know how you can value them as a person.” - Myles Horton

Hey all y'all movie people! Letterboxd is up for sale and there's a serious effort for its users to buy it. "Letterboxd is a community of people who spent years writing reviews, building lists, recommending films, discovering new directors, championing overlooked movies, and keeping cinema alive through conversation. "Now it’s being sold to the highest bidder. "This is bigger than saving a website. It's about who owns creative labor, and breaking the cycle that tu...

Calling all REI members! Here’s our chance to take back our co-op from big oil and anti-worker corporate interests.  REI’s Board of Directors is out of control, dominated by Exxon Mobil, Proctor and Gamble, and other corporate executives. REI’s board denies us a real vote. They just put their cherry-picked corporate candidates on our ballot to vote up or down. Now is our chance to take back our co-op by rejecting their slate of corporate executive candidates. https://www.trueco-ops.org/

Here's a great little #foss project for movement people. " Rayhunter is a new open source tool we’ve created that runs off an affordable mobile hotspot that we hope empowers everyone, regardless of technical skill, to help search out CSS around the world. "CSS (also known as Stingrays or IMSI catchers) are devices that masquerade as legitimate cell-phone towers, tricking phones within a certain radius into connecting to the device rather than a tower." ht...

"These communications are of very low bit-rate … and use very little power. Useful for … a wide range of situations where traditional infrastructure is lacking or intermittent, and communication with others over dispersed or changing physical terrain is essential. Research is showing how Search and Rescue (SAR) teams can greatly benefit from the use of LoRa, specifically when coupled with GPS sensors, and especially when complimented by line-of-sight LoRa repeaters." https://ww...

“On a sweltering August afternoon at Red Emma’s, the anarchist bookstore, cafe, and community organizing space in Baltimore’s Waverly neighborhood, something that would have seemed impossible two decades ago was underway: the first-ever national convening of worker cooperative restaurants. Over two days, 100 worker-owners from more than 30 cafes, pizzerias, bars, breweries, and coffee shops from across the country had descended on Baltimore for an intensive program.” https://baltimorebeat.com/h...

My cooperative development organization, Carolina Common Enterprise, lost federal funding earlier this year. We've re-engineered our business model to not depend on grants and internally to operate as a worker cooperative. There's a lot of need for our services. We have new projects in the pipeline and prospects to break even soon, but our cash has run out. Please help us keep going for another month or two. Even a few dollars. "Resilience" has become a dark pattern. Ordinary resilience is a good thing, the ability to recoup from a setback. "Resilience" as capitalist society frames it is the imperative to endure an endless series of existential challenges and remain produtive.

"So please, please, don’t let the state split the movement into “good protester” and “bad protester.” Even if there were agent provocateurs in the crowd, their goal in picking fights with the cops would be to convince us to do that splitting.
