A fresh Home Assistant install feels so nice. I'm this close to not restore the backup and simply start over. Context: I'm migrating from Docker to full HAOS. #HomeAssistant @homeassistant@fedigroups.social

Is anyone in the home lab community running NixOS on a Raspberry Pi 4B (8GB), and could share your frustrations or cautionary tales? I am seriously considering dividing into that. I don't need convincing. At this point I just need to know where the rakes and the skeletons are. So basically just give me the dirt. πŸ˜„ #HomeLab #NixOS @homelab@fedigroups.social

Does anyone have a recommendation for a Raspberry Pi 4 (specifically 4) HAT that can provide PoE *and* a full size NVME at the same time? I have the official PoE HAT, but it doesn't provide enough power for an NVME connected via USB enclosure, and I would prefer to keep the PoE if possible (since I can use it as "poor-man's remote reboot"). And, in case you're wondering: I do have a PoE splitter dongle sitting idle in a cabinet, but I would prefer to avoid it because of t...

Possibly controversial take: I like when the InfoSec team is very active/present and breathes down my neck. Gives me the confidence that I'm either doing something right, or they can stop me from doing something wrong. Of course it doesn't remove my responsibility of doing the appropriate research. #InfoSec #SRE #DevOps

So, if I can't trust an IoT device, a camera, a printer, any smart device that calls home, and now some brands of TV and set-top boxes, what is left to trust in my network? Should I just have one VLAN per device type and not let anyone talk to anyone? This is getting out of hand, and is very tiring. Ps.: I'm not asking for technical advice, this is just me venting. #HomeLab #HomeAssistant #Networking #InfoSec @homelab@fedigroups.social

I don't use Claude Code, but when talking about AI/LLM the name most likely needs to be mentioned, one way or another (I do use Claude models though). The problem is that I've been having some conversations in real life over the past few weeks, and it bothers me how I want to talk about CLOUD computing, and people keep thinking I'm talking about Claude. I think I'm gonna start saying KLAH-L-D or KLOWD to see if it sounds different. 🫀

That's a wrap for DevOpsDays Raleigh. Another great conference, with a very interesting note: it had the right amount of non-AI vs AI talks, and most importantly, whenever AI was mentioned was relevant, and not a vendor talk. The open spaces fostered some great conversations, and the hallway track is always amazing. Can't wait for next year! #DevOpsDays #DevOpsDaysRaleigh #Conference

New blog post! I 3D printed a 10-inch (10") rack for my homelab. It was a very long project, but very rewarding at the end. Since I had a lot of help from various people on Mastodon and other communities, I felt like it would be important to show what I did. Also I hope that while I'm sharing my thoughts and the process to get there, I would be able to help other people with their own projects. And if my project works as inspiration for yours, I would be very happy if you let me...

Someone gave me a logo in SVG, and they wanted to use that to print a plaque in 3D. I immediately thought of @jwildeboer and his adventures with InkScape. I still have a lot to learn, but I was able to figure out how to prepare the logo for proper printing in less than 10 minutes. πŸ˜„ #3DPrinting #InkScape @3dprinting

Does anyone in the home lab and/or 3D printing community have experience with 10" printed racks? I only need 6U right now, but have space for 8U, maybe 10U if I'm pushing. Everything in life has pros and cons: Kubernetes in the home lab makes a lot of things more complicated, but a lot of other things less complicated. Replacing Telegraf + InfluxDB with Node Exporter and sending directly to Victoria Metrics gives me much more visibility on the Raspberry Pis. On top of that, using SNMP Exporter to collect data from Synology allows me to completely get rid of containers running inside an appliance. Silver linings. #HomeLab #TalosLinux #VictoriaMetrics #Telegraf @ho...

RE: https://hachyderm.io/@badnetmask/116432248383092547 Update on the lab rack decision: I started printing the Lab Rax. It has the minimum size that I need (5U) and can be expanded (up to 10U). It also has a very strong community behind it, which will make it very easy to find parts. RE: https://hachyderm.io/@badnetmask/115906811590788658 Well, it's the end of an era: my 3 Lenovo M720q are now a full Talos Linux cluster, Proxmox is gone, and the Framework Desktop has been repurposed as a dedicated game station running Bazzite. Most likely I will migrate from my old Razer laptop to the Framework Desktop, and make it my only workstation, but not today. #HomeLab #TalosLinux #Proxmox #Lenovo #Bazzite #Framework #Razer @homelab

I migrated from a laptop to a desktop. On both I have Bazzite DX running. RE: https://hachyderm.io/@badnetmask/115786742434227283 Hey folks, if anyone ever followed my blog post about enrolling the Talos UEFI keys into the Lenovo M720Q Tiny, you might want to look at it again. I realized I forgot one step, which is completely optional, and may vary according to your security posture, but doing so provides better security. After you enroll the Talos key, the BIOS switches to "User Mode", which allows the OS to change the keys. Ideally you should go...

Does anyone know of a good self-hosted Kanban board and/or project management software that works as similar to Jira as possible? I know my question is going to make someone mad, but I just don't want to switch context way too much when managing my personal projects. Something similar to Trello is also acceptable. I currently use Kanboard, but the interface is way too limited. I understand their choices, but I would like something more rich/responsive/automated. #HomeLab #SelfHosted...

New blog post! It has been long overdue, so I finally decided to publish a (simple) diagram of my home lab.
