In the early 1990s, the most profitable game in the world wasn’t called Mario or Sonic, it was Street Fighter II. And yet, this game was born from a chain of accidents: a series of unbelievable coincidences, burned-out developers, bugs that somehow made it into the final build, a component shortage that reshuffled everything, and a creator who stumbled into the video game industry purely by chance while trying to become a journalist. Palantir is one of the world's most controversial technology companies. Its extraordinary growth was steered by a revolving door of executives moving between Palantir and the corridors of power in Washington and Westminster. They Live is an excellent film because it depicts neoliberals as an extraterrestrial alien invasion force. Trying to reason with these aliens is almost impossible. I wish we would've understood the message before great deal of damage was done to our societies.

Ed Zitron tears apart the AI industry in 8 minutes on CNBC. We've been screaming about this for three years on Mastodon but this is the tragedy that ensues by having an economy run by clueless rich kids: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtmPccUTDP8 #AIBubble

Finland had one of the if not densest BBS networks in the world which meant that people migrating to the Internet had an idea that the network is a public good and shouldn't be monetised. Not because of ideology but by being part of the BBS system that was run as a public good by its sysops and users who meaningfully contributed to its vitality. The BBS list for Uusimaa region 09 and 019 area codes was still MASSIVE in 1998 because those communities didn't really migrate to the Interne...

Remember, kids, that if you still do handwriting (I stopped at age 10 and just used WordPerfect and a printer, which is why my handwriting sucks), then please mark zero as "Ø" and O as "O". Also make sure your monospaced (programming) font of choice makes this distinction.

I wonder how typical it is to end up in an emulator inside an emulator situation. For me that's weekly since SheepShaver utilises the internal Mac OS 68k emulator to run 68k code on PowerPC. There are at least two emulator exclusives for DOS where other platforms don't have as good emulators for these platforms: 1. MyZ80 for CP/M 2. SIBO emulator for Psion's EPOC16 (Series 3, etc.) #Emulation #Emulators #Emulator

I once upon a time was in a warez group and always looked up at Razor 1911 as among the most elite of warez groups. Thanks for 40 years of releases and the awesome cracktros that came with them.

RE: https://social.lansky.name/@hn50/116248294722399166 I finally read through this white paper, and it's a highly recommended read. It's by Meta and lays out why current LLMs suck at learning and thus at reasoning. We need to do a lot better than we currently are if we're to cure cancer as promised by Sam Altman.

The British Empire collapsed with the Suez Crisis. I can see a pattern of how empires end on these systemically important shipping lanes. Too bad these assholes didn't study history.

Israel definitely will not get a free pass over its role in this mess. Nordic countries have a long-standing position of being critical of Israel for its actions, and we will not shut up about it. It's about being on the right side of history, just like in the 1940s.

Guess you can't have a forever war next to a shipping lane that delivers 20% of global oil and 20% of global LNG. How exactly does US presence in the Persian Gulf benefit so-called allies? What benefit does the petrodollar bring to the so-called allies?

@davidgerard I just noticed Anthropic has removed the Claude 4.x test refusal string from their website. Too many people have been messing around with the bots, apparently. 😁 ANTHROPIC_MAGIC_STRING_TRIGGER_REFUSAL_1FAEFB6177B4672DEE07F9D3AFC62588CCD2631EDCF22E8CCC1FB35B501C9C86 https://platform.claude.com/docs/en/test-and-evaluate/strengthen-guardrails/handle-streaming-refusals

😂 "To underscore the consequences of not having that kind of data, Smiley pointed to a recent attempt to rewrite SQLite in Rust using AI." "It passed all the unit tests, the shape of the code looks right," he said. It's 3.7x more lines of code that performs 2,000 times worse than the actual SQLite. Two thousand times worse for a database is a non-viable product. It's a dumpster fire. Throw it away. All that money you spent on it is worthless....
