@meetingcpp@mastodon.online I enjoy just randomly flipping through that book and reading a page or two.

@akkana@fosstodon.org Last fall I had problems where power-related USB errors stemming from apcupsd preceded the system hanging. Apparently apcupsd, the daemon for the APC UPS, was triggering PCIe errors that caused a lockup. The full horror is described at https://bugs.debian.org/cgi-bin/bugreport.cgi?bug=1102175

@foone@digipres.club In November or so, I applied for a job at Intuitive Surgical, and got a response within a few hours. I had got the itch to leave Aurora after 6 years, but have ended up in #berlin.

@topio@mastodon.social Der nächste erste Sonntag in April ist Ostern. Vermutlich passiert dann kein D.I. Day in Moabit. Treffen wir uns der zweite Sonntag dann?

@jzb@hachyderm.io I deleted my LinkedIn account about 15 years ago, yet somehow I've managed to stay employed and even get promoted in the interim. In 2025, I even managed to find a job in a foreign country where I knew few people. How is it possible? Like you, I give talks at conferences and I write articles. Since I'm a developer, I post code to public repos and send projects patches. The lesson: don't tell people you're motivated and competent, show them.

@berber@chaos.social With reggae, I've always loved the "dub version" where you hear the same track with only the beats. Sadly, we lost dub great Robbie Shakespeare a few years ago, and Sly Dunbar just last month. There's a decent chance that they're playing on any reggae favorite track.

@JulianOliver@mastodon.social We shouldn't forget intermediates between self-hosting and megacorps. Mastodon is an obvious example: I'm not hosting this instance. (Thanks @Larvitz@burningboard.net ). signalapp@mastodon.world is run by a non-profit foundation. @nextcloud@mastodon.xyz comes quickly to mind. It's for-profit, but it has user-friendly principles. A similar description applies to @openstreetmap@en.osm.town and Bandcamp.

@llvm@fosstodon.org There's also this very credible good news: "AI lowers the cost of reproducing established designs, which will shift competitive advantage away from isolated codebases and toward execution, ecosystems, and continuous innovation."

@llvm@fosstodon.org Super interesting: thanks for sharing. This seems like the money quote: "current AI systems excel at assembling known techniques and optimizing toward measurable success criteria, while struggling with the open-ended generalization required for production-quality systems." The overall point seems to be that the production of the new compiler implementation is a remarkable accomplishment, but the result is not actually all that useful. Since refactoring the wh...
