So the chickens have become kind of pests when I'm working on pulling weeds in a garden bed they aren't fenced off from. They come running and I have 6 chicken heads darting in to peck any worms I might have turned over.....until today. I just discovered they are seriously skeeved out if I'm wearing my brightly colored, elbow length garden gloves. They still cluster around me but don't stick their heads into my work area. They give my hands serious side eye but t...

I'm not out of my mind, this super soggy spring we've been experiencing in our area is exceptional. Wettest March-April in 153 years for this region. #WetSpring

Well a baby bunny i encountered while mowing the back area of our property, got scared and ran up to hide by our peach tree near the fence leading to our backyard, seems to have not only entered our back yard but settled under our deck. At first the chickens and Bun Bun were wary of one another but they've gotten used to each other in the last week. The chickens did do some impressive fluffing displays to warn off the intruder at first. The bun was thoroughly unimpressed though. Just go...

Dim sum night at home for dinner tonight. Everything here except the tteokbokki was made from scratch by yours truly. Am pretty pleased with my plaiting game on the bao and potstickers. Wrappers made from scratch too! I make a big batch of the pot stickers and bao then freeze the rest. Can generally get 3 dinners out of a batch of each. It is a fair amount of work to make but once done, makes for easy fast dinner for two more nights. #dimsum

Well our apple trees have finally blossomed however there's hardly any blooms. We had a super cold and long winter followed by a super wet April. The cold and excessive wet seems to have made our trees go....NOPE! Ah well, they've had good crops since we moved in 2022. They deserve a year off. #apples #homesteading

Sadly the weather hasn't been cooperative to do an outside fire in our fire pit this Beltane..too cold and muddy still. So instead we are doing what's hopefully last fire in our wood burning stove til next fall. Making some fireplace smores and watching a restored version of the Irish 80s film, the Outcasts. #Beltane

I think maybe our super late bloomer Megaera has finally laid her 1st egg! Found this egg in the nest box today that is much smaller than the other girls are laying and is MUCH lighter than the others eggs. Stheno also lays a much lighter than usual egg for a Marans hen but hers are pretty heavily speckled. Not 1000% sure this is Megaera's as I didn't see her disappear into the coop for laying. Was busy doing inside stuff. Will be more vigilant and see if more of these very ligh...

Happy 1st birthday to my sweetie birds! They got to spend most of the day out in the yard foraging for whatever green grass they could find and bugs. Hopefully the yard will break dormancy soon and the foraging will improve. Some freezing rain started to fall though so had to lure them back to their covered coop run for the rest of the afternoon. Gave them a couple collard green leaves to have something to demolish and in this pic they are enthusiastically gobbling up dried soldier fly larve.....
