I think maybe our super late bloomer Megaera has finally laid her 1st egg! Found this egg in the nest box today that is much smaller than the other girls are laying and is MUCH lighter than the others eggs. Stheno also lays a much lighter than usual egg for a Marans hen but hers are pretty heavily speckled. Not 1000% sure this is Megaera's as I didn't see her disappear into the coop for laying. Was busy doing inside stuff. Will be more vigilant and see if more of these very light eggs get laid. Megaera is a year and 2 months old now so that's a way late bloomer for her breed. She is the low chicken in the pecking order so wonder if that might play a part in her getting started late in laying. She also seems more put off by the crappy spring we've had than the others. At one point wondered if she was egg bound but she was pooping, eating, and acting pretty normal when I separated her from the others to see if I could figure out why she hadn't started laying yet. She does sometimes chill by herself away from the others but seems more like low pecking order chicken behavior rather than sick chicken behavior. Will have to wait and see if more of these light, not speckled eggs get laid. This is an embarrassingly light brown egg for a Marans hen. But I'll be relieved shes laying finally even if they are considered substandard coloration for her breed. It's not like I'm showing these chickens. I won't tell her they're too light. 😆 #chickens #ChickensOfMastodon
