Well that sucks. I've taken the seattle/portland rail service a few times decades ago and it was awesome. Also, Portland's union station was pretty great, back in the day (I get the sense that it's current ownership/status is in some kind of flux): https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=llWzci6rh_Y

Naturally. As soon as we can get the apparatus of government to agree some people don't deserve equal treatment under the law, then you just need to push that boundary wider. Trans people are a camel nose under that tent. This is the real slippery slope. https://masto.ai/@transworld/116929720063807940

I see Linus is showing his whole ass on the AI topic today. "It's just a tool" and "the debate is over about if it's useful: it is" are just the "big tent" argument in another arena. It completely elides the ethical and moral questions about training and running the models themselves. By artificially narrowing the question, he absolves himself of needing to concern himself with any of the wider context, all of which is HORRIBLY NEGATIVE. He's preemptive...

If you are an elected democrat, you do not have to hand it to the nazis, even if -- especially if -- they are now dead. These people are oppressors of large swathes of your constituents, they want you to oppose them, not pal around with them and lionize them. The whole "we need a strong republican party" bullshit implies that you want opposition to your policies more than you want to enact your policies, you know? Your constituents want you to enact your policies Meh.

I gather a bunch of queer sex workers are being public about Lindsey Graham. I know there is a lot of drama about publicly outing public figures, but I have a pretty straightforward view on this: If you are queer behind doors and you actively oppress people just like you in public, you are not just a hypocritical piece of shit, you are doing something immoral and unethical. You can't be trusted in any arena of life and we need to know that when it would stop you harming us

Huh. Amazon us-east-1 is right in the middle of the current US heatwave, right? I'm sure it's fine. It's not like we built a single point of failure into the designed-to-be-resilient-in-the-face-of-nuclear-war Internet. Oh wait.

The US's failure to complete reconstruction, post-civil-war, is precisely why we find ourselves in our current political mess. And the same kinds of structural challenges will face us in "fixing" all the damage of the Trump/MAGA era, whenever we manage to get to attempt that.

@riverrockstree is having a lot of trouble breathing today. The air quality is legit pretty good, at least generally -- anybody know what trees are having sex that might be contributing? I suppose "all of them", considering the season...

fatigue is absolutely PANCAKING me today. ugh. VA redistricting fight isn't helping. I don't want to live in a dictatorship of even as strong as it is today, let alone what the republicans are aiming for. they are absolutely making moves to put all their undesirables in camps (queer and trans and disabled folks are all on that list) and the more power they consolidate, the worse that risk gets.

I feel like not enough people in this day and age have seen the Random Startup Generator -- I think it used to have images in the header, but otherwise it seems to continue to function. https://tiffzhang.com/startup

Tomorrow is May 1st, aka May Day. It's also the day of the US economic shutdown protest -- no work, no shopping, no school. Fun fact: IIRC the US doesn't have labor day on May 1st to, effectively, deny us solidarity with international workers who celebrate labor now. The wider US business community has always been like this.

Seriously, this is just monstrous. SNAP and SSI are insufficient to begin with, and means testing makes them both difficult to get on. So now, if you have one, and your *relatives* have the other, your benefits are being shrunk? https://werd.social/@ben/116482513886558215

Only half-charged the battery off the rigid panels yesterday, so I left it on the rigids (and it has finished charging now, at 11:30am), while charging the battery I used yesterday on the 60 watt folding panel today, which is working pretty well so far (although I'll start running into shadow issues as we transition to the afternoon). First charge of the MNT Reform today was the smaller battery I ruled out as a daily user (I can only get 1.5 charges out of it).

Not a new insight, but I have been down on capitalism, personally, for awhile, and I think I'm really finally waking up to the idea that corporations exist, as a kind of social technology, primarily to allow the exploitation of it's employees at scale. The people at the top -- board members and executives particularly, but also senior managers -- are motivated by perverse incentives which exploit those beneath them, by design.

My response to stress is to freeze and sleep. I'm up to one nap a day, and I'll take more if I can get them. 😬 Even so, I don't ever feel rested after waking. It's a problem.
