I’ve just read 25 student essays, the vast majority of them extruded from ChatGPT. So depressing. I copy paste and tweak the feedback. What a waste of everyone’s time. #AI

Putting two (el Nino) and two (AI bubble) and two (this article about all the capital pushing insurance prices down https://www.ft.com/content/3cae57bd-c2d8-4ed5-87a8-644a27c86d93?syn-25a6b1a6=1) together… it looks like it may be adding up to a horrific hurricane season precipitating a massive financial meltdown. I want to be wrong. We’ll see.

Frequently I see academics describing themselves in their public profiles as "activists". I'm not sure what they think this means. In my experience, being an 'activist' puts you in conflict with exactly the kinds of institutions that employ academics. I do not advertise my activism on my CV etc. Should I though? I'm curious about academics who do advertise their activism, and what that activism entails. Please share thoughts if this is you #aca...

I've set an alert for a used/out of print book and every time I get a notification the price has gone up. Now £250. Sigh. #books

history rhymes. this passage from Dalrymple's history of the East India Company is about Britain in 1599 and the excised word is 'religion', but you could easily be talking about #Brexit today.

I’m sitting behind Krishnan Gurumurthy at the #GreenParty local election launch. In 2022 we had almost no press. Now we have everyone from Novara media to the Daily Mail.

@katemorley Indeed, focusing people's attention on a problem you are exacerbating with your policies is not a winning strategy. It's incredible how bad they are at this.

after 20 years, the key for my bike lock has broken off... in the lock. I have a spare, so now going to try to remove the key end with some combination of blu tac, super glue, needle nosed pliers and toothpicks. Hooray.

Two of the establishments in this article are within spitting distance of my home, and frankly they are both overrated. https://www.theguardian.com/cities/2026/apr/04/not-quite-greggs-tiktok-creators-put-londons-gentrified-bakeries-to-the-test

Controversial opinion: if you're a white European man, with a full-time academic job, in a famous institution, winning awards from wealthy organisations, getting an all expenses paid trip to give a conference keynote, then you are ill-equipped to speak about "[discipline] from the margins". #academicChatter

I'm in an experts seminar, contributing to UN Environment Programme's textile policy for a just transition etc etc. I'm the only non-white person here. Sigh.

I’m catching up with ‘oh God, what now’ and listening to @JonnElledge defending Boris Johnson, saying he didn’t set up any death camps. 250,000+ people died bc of Boris ‘let the bodies pile high’ Johnson’s decisions. Incredible to hear Elledge forget this very recent history

A colleague is submitting a (hopefully) last round of revisions on an article. Between submission and publication, the entire editorial board has left, set up and published their first issue of a whole new journal 🤯 #academicChatter
