history rhymes. this passage from Dalrymple's history of the East India Company is about Britain in 1599 and the excised word is 'religion', but you could easily be talking about #Brexit today.

    @Talia@mstdn.social except that "most powerful institution" in Europe was the Catholic Church, in the era of the Inquisition and heretic-burnings. (Not exactly as enlightened as the EU!) And in those days religion was politics–the split was over the English monarch wanting a divorce and, later, to stay out of the French and Spanish Imperial spheres of control. A brexit analogy is a bit of a stretch!
