@Talia@mstdn.social except that "most powerful institution" in Europe was the Catholic Church, in the era of the Inquisition and heretic-burnings. (Not exactly as enlightened as the EU!) And in those days religion was politics–the split was over the English monarch wanting a divorce and, later, to stay out of the French and Spanish Imperial spheres of control.
A brexit analogy is a bit of a stretch!

@cstross@wandering.shop a stretch, really? You’ve fleshed it out pretty nicely I think. Petty personal conflict ends up at the heart of British political life, blowing up relations with Europe… tale as old as time I suppose
