@mekkaokereke Why is so much Black music about violence and misogyny? Well, let's take a look at works by* white* artists, particularly those from the 1960s and '50s. And they're all on YouTube for your enjoyment. There's *Johnny Get Angr*y by Joanie Summers, *Lightning Strikes Again* by Lou Christie, and Connie Francis' *Lipstick's on Your Collar*, (1959). And there's more where that came from. So, Black artists don't have a cor...

@mdm @mekkaokereke That *is *a fucked-up song. And then, there's the song, *The Last Kiss* by the Cavaliers. (1964). Lousy driver couldn't handle driving in the rain, which caused him to get into an accident and kill his date.

@drmaddkap Charity at our house is done at home, not the grocery store. We give to plenty of organizations. So, if Albertson's wants to give to the local food bank as we do, they are free to do so without our assistance.

@georgetakei Well, he'd also have a problem with: Li'l Nas X Dolly Parton Willie Nelson Johnny Cash Jelly Roll Luke Combs Ray Charles Charlie Pride Beyonce is in good company. But that Dukes of Hazzard guy will be relieved to hear that this still is a free country. So, if he doesn't want to listen to Beyonce sing country songs, he f*ck doesn't have to listen to it.

@mekkaokereke There have been scores of cases in which all-white juries acquit white defendants who were clearly guilty of murdering Black people. Emmett Till is a stark, heartbreaking example. Murderers Roy Bryant and his half-brother J.W. Milam were acquitted by an all-white jury that took 67 minutes to reach its verdict. (This included having a break for Cokes.) Bryant and Milam later had an interview with *Look* magazine in which they described Till's abduction and murder.

@BlueWave_Surfer@mastodon.social Can anyone tell if Trump's garish sneakers are any good to actually play or walk/run in? I don't play basketball, but it seems there's not much arch support.

@StillIRise1963 My first perm was a rite-of-passage, the start of decades of (cancer-causing) chemicals applied to my hair. I stopped getting perms shortly before my dermatologist diagnosed my hair loss and attributed it to central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia. She said it's common among African American women. It's not genetic since African women don't treat their hair like we do. I've been using a steroidal solution to grow my hair back, and I haven&...

@StillIRise1963 Five is an awfully young age to have a perm; I was 13 years old or so. I wish we all knew then what we know now about perms. And thank goodness for the natural hair movement.

Hercules Posey was President Washington's chef before he escaped to freedom. Historians are examining Posey's life and giving him his due. https://www.nytimes.com/2024/02/20/dining/hercules-posey-george-washington-chef.html?unlocked_article_code=1.X00.Hb7e.hEhgHfLDkvMK&smid=url-share #blackhistorymonth #BlackMastodon #histodons #history #georgewashington

It ππ possible to have your say from a kitchen like Leigh McGowan, aka Politics Girl, and speak like a grown woman. But what we saw with Katie Britt and her Republican response to the SOTU screams the kitchen is where women belong, baby fundie voice included. 123 #KatieBritt #SOTU2024 #sotu

@georgetakei Everything was running late because of the Masters golf tournament, so I thought we hadn't recorded enough slots on the TV Guide to see Billy Joel's 100th MSG concert to the finish. But no, it was CBS's fault. And right in the middle of πππππ πππ too! The concert can be streamed in its entirety on Paramount+ for subscribers. What's really happy news is CBS is broadcasting the concert again on Friday, April 19 at 9 pm ET/8 pm CT.

I'm trying to find a short story about a middle/upper middle-class African American teen who's embarrassed by her grandmother. She's mortified this uneducated woman is moving in. Her mom tells her off. I read this in high school years ago & that's all I can recall. Help? #bookstodon #books #BlackMastodon
