@StillIRise1963 My first perm was a rite-of-passage, the start of decades of (cancer-causing) chemicals applied to my hair.
I stopped getting perms shortly before my dermatologist diagnosed my hair loss and attributed it to central centrifugal cicatricial alopecia. She said it's common among African American women. It's not genetic since African women don't treat their hair like we do.
I've been using a steroidal solution to grow my hair back, and I haven't had a perm in more than 10 years.
