  The scarier cars to me when I'm on my bike approaching the trail crossing are not those that are clearly going way too fast to notice me.   The words I want to yell at Doug Ford right now would probably require a content warning on Mastodon.   It's nice that @Waterfox@mastodon.social syncs with a Firefox account and I didn't have to set up everything again, but since Waterfox has its own adblocker and a warning if you install another one, I can't keep an adblocker in Firefox without getting that warning in Waterfox. Not a problem if I stick with Waterfox, and I might because my only real problem so far with it is buggy UI for the vertical tabs, but it is annoying if I go back and forth for a bit while trying it out.

  Grocery store bike parking being on a slight slope is a dangerous combination. Hold the bike from rolling away. Hold the cart from rolling away. Transfer items from the cart to the bike. I only have two hands. Uh-oh, another cyclist is trying to park and pushed my cart away without realizing it's a slope and almost hit a car.

  #Toronto people who bike, how hard would it be for me to come in on the train, rent a bike, and spend part of a day riding the Lakeshore? I saw somewhere online that it's about 9km, mostly flat, mostly detached from cars other than intersections, and with lots of places to stop for food or bathroom? I'm not a great cyclist. I'd probably need a cruiser like mine to be comfortable enough for a longer ride.

  My recipe for an exhausting workday: second day in a row wearing a mask all day in an office to limit my smoke intake, arrive to discover all the sites are offline, a build runner that was barely moving for hours, a couple security patch deployments, and code freeze coming in a week to try to get through as much as I can before including a new issue raised by a colleague as something that should be a priority but which I currently have no idea how to do. #WebDev

  I've now been in my office for over an hour and my eyes still feel a little irritated (not as bad as when fully outside). I am not very confident that the old building I work in with bad insulation and single pane windows is doing a great job keeping the smoke out.

  I realized that in addition to my cat's 7th birthday, yesterday also marked 5 years in my job (and the corresponding increase in vacation days). This is the longest I've been in one place and I am quite happy with that.

  I know "vote with your wallet" has serious limits because it would take a lot of us boycotting the evil thing to offset just one billionaire supporting the evil thing and that usually isn't viable. But I'd suggest there is still significant benefit in trying to align your spending (and corollary, your data) with your values. You feel better when you aren't constantly feeling like you're contradicting your own sense of values. I'm sure I've seen research on this...

  I did the thing where I searched (Bing) my extremely common name. For years the top result was some photographer and usually there are some references to a footballer in there. Now it's a blogger about side hustles at the top, then still the footballer. Before it gets to me now is also a story about a different Ryan Robinson, in the same province as me, getting arrested for child pornography. So that's a fun development /sarcasm.

  Sounds like we're only a couple weeks away from getting Telus PureFibre Internet activated, pending verifying some details about the TV channel packages and some technical questions about app support and using the router in bridge mode. Well be going from 50 mbps down and 10mbps up DSL to 1500 down and 1000 up.

  So far I like the idea of Gander Social a lot more like I actually like using it, because of a couple of weird UI choices and the fact that it has only barely started to implement ATProto (it can follow Bluesky accounts, but the replies don't go through, and Bluesky can't follow Gander accounts - kinda like the relationship between Threads and the rest of the ActivityPub universe). https://tech.ryanrobinson.ca/2026/gander-social/
