The supposed certainty many neoliberal thinkers have about accounting and economics is entirely misplaced. The idea that anything in economic data has an objective reality is just wrong. Note: I wrote this infographic. I used AI to create the final image.

Why has Anthropic boss Dario Amodei called for a halt in AI development? I suspect he's hit his human limits. He is in a blind funk, and he may not be alone. In other words, he literally has no idea what to do. He founded Anthropic, but nothing prepared him for what it has become. He is supposedly a guru, but he is also a human being. Put the two together, and at the moment, the human being is showing. He may be right. AI may need to stop for a moment, or longer. But if it does, there...

Tax banks more, now! https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2026/09/23/tax-banks-now/ The City says higher taxes will drive banks away. That might be exactly what Britain needs.

Has Andy Burnham no idea what to do? https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2026/09/30/has-andy-burnham-no-idea-what-to-do/ Why is Andy Burnham only offering action after the next election, which he knows he will lose? Is it because he does not actually know what to do?

The great challenge this country will face soon is deciding who runs it and for whom. Is it run by central banks for financial markets, or by elected governments for people? That is the question. Resolving it may be ugly, but it will have to happen. https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2026/10/09/andrew-bailey-thinks-financial-markets-rule-they-dont-but-he-did-define-the-conflict-to-come/

I hope they win. https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2026/08/06/the-democrats-of-michigan-have-chosen-to-fight-i-hope-they-win/ In the USA, some Democrats are choosing to take on the fight against those corporate interests that put money ahead of people, when politics in a democracy should be about people before corporate power. It is a fight that they win.

Money is not the scarce resource for Burnham. Ideas are. https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2026/07/22/money-is-not-the-scarce-resource-for-burnham-ideas-are/ Burnham is "paying" for £2 bus fares by making international climate funding into loans, which have always turned out badly. Rehashing failed ideas does not deliver radical government. It repeats failure.

Cutting VAT on electricity does not address our real energy crisis https://www.taxresearch.org.uk/Blog/2026/07/21/cutting-vat-on-electricity-does-not-address-our-real-energy-crisis/ The National Grid spends more than £1 billion a year - the cost of this cut - on wasted energy because the Grid is so lacking in investment. That's the real crisis.
