I wrote something I wish my mom had when I was 16. It's called Beyond Blindness. It's a resource for parents and students who suspect blindness isn't the whole story. https://lanie.work/resources/beyond-blindness/

My GoFundMe covers medical, accessibility, and living costs that insurance doesn't. If this is the first time you're seeing this, the link is here. Shares help as much as donations. https://gofund.me/0a62fcaa3

This week I shipped two major releases: WordPredictor v1.4.0 (30x larger language model, 11M words) and Everrealm v1.2.0 (resource pipeline system). I also created an Upwork profile and submitted an essay. All from my nursing home bed on a computer with a failing hard drive. There's a better one with an SSD ready for me for under $400, but this week's $411 in donations covers either tools or the computer, not both. If my work matters to you, your support helps. https://gofund.me/0a62f...

Quick update: I'm working toward a group home through an HCS waiver, and my GoFundMe helps cover the costs that fall through the cracks. If you can give or share, it matters. https://gofund.me/0a62fcaa3

Update: good news. The dietician approved Kate Farms liquid nutrition after three days of asking. I have shakes in my room now as a bridge until the facility's supply arrives. My stomach is calm, my RA pain is nearly gone, and my energy is back. Liquid nutrition works — my body just can't process solid food right now. Anne, the head of nursing, is now coordinating my appointments and transport. An RN is helping me file a grievance about the three-day delay. My mom doesn't have to ke...

Everrealm 1.0 is live. The alpha is over. The number one requested feature was sound. It's in — optional, off by default, no spatial audio, no background music. Short tones for key actions like establishing settlements, completing research, and advancing Ages. Toggle in Settings. 1.0 means I'm done rebuilding. No more save wipes. Future updates are additive. Play: https://everrealm.lanie.work Download: https://github.com/RareBird15/everrealm/releases/tag/v1.0.0 Works with NVDA, JAWS,...

Finally got my MCP setup working in VS Code Insiders on my Raspberry Pi! 🎉 And I'm posting this directly from the editor on my Windows PC, connected over SSH with the Remote-SSH extension. The whole setup is feeling pretty seamless now. I spend a lot of time in VSCode, so I'm really coming to like MCP servers. #MCP #VSCode #Pi #RaspberryPi #RemoteSSH #DevEnvironment #CodingSetup

👋 I'm Lanie, a blind developer pursuing CS and doing accessibility testing after being denied a state hardware loan. I'm raising funds for a new accessible workstation and Mantis Q40 Braille display so I can keep working and studying. My computer isn't just a machine—it's my communication aid, my regulation tool, and my entire workspace. If you can spare a few dollars or boost this post, it means the world. 🔗 https://gofund.me/f2b52dffa #Accessibility #BlindDev #AssistiveTech...

Curious what other screen reader users, disabled tech folks, or desktop-first people are using these days for news discovery. I’ve been looking at tools like Feedly, NewsBlur, Particle, and similar RSS/AI-assisted readers because I’m trying to reduce how dependent I am on my phone for news and discovery. Right now, Google Discover is honestly the closest thing I’ve found to “surface interesting things before I even know I want to search for them,” but it’s frustratingly mobile-first. The probl...

#Blind #XMPP users on #Windows, what chat app do you use? I just set up a #Snikket instance and phone number through JMP.chat. Tried #Gajim and it didn't seem accessible. @mastoblind @main

Hi all! I'm considering giving #RSS another try because I haven't been able to find a news app that works well for me. Before I jump back in, I'd love your advice on a few things: What RSS reader do you use and recommend?I'm #Blind and use the #NVDA #ScreenReader, so strict keyboard accessibility is a must. I mainly read on my PC, though a companion mobile app would be a nice bonus. Does your reader play nicely with screen readers? How do you actually find feeds? The last time I...
