  July 21, 2026 Today’s gardening milestone is the garlic harvest. We harvested about 200 garlic over several mornings. This variety is Estonia! Thank you to the Baltic for the varieties. The roots are fanned out connecting to the black soil. 1. The garlic harvest is complete. 2. All of the varieties have some good garlic heads to use for seed for next growing season. 3.   Native plants store and share water for the habitat. The cup plant is a great example. The leaves clasp together at the stem to form a watertight cup. Storing water and sharing are wonderful characteristics! The cup plant gets big. It’s not a good choice for all sites. This striped leafhopper is happy. The cup of water is similar to a bird bath for the smaller creatures. #pollinators, #nativeplants, #minnesota, #gardening.

  May 13, 2026. Native plants journaling. The Uvularia Grandiflora is a woodland native plant. The droopy yellow blossoms provide food for pollinators in the spring. The bumblebees, mason bees, halictid bees, and Andrenid bees feed from the nectar and collect pollen. That covers a lot of pollinators! We have a big season for numbers of onions, shallots, and leeks. The eating, fermenting, and sharing is balanced. We included more of them in fermented Indonesia Rempah and also dried them plain to freeze and add to recipes.

  April 30, 2026. Gardening journal. Thank you to the soil. The planned garden planting includes beans, beets, and chard. The best of the Hidatsa Shield beans will be planted. The biggest Hidatsa Shield can be sorted by hand and eye. The seeds for the beets, Arikara Yellow bean, and Cherokee Trail of Tears bean are from Seed Savers Exchange.   Sunday, April 19th. These kimchi vegetables are two days into a short fermentation. This is a Korean Kkakdugi recipe from Maangchi. The garden shared new chives, nettles, and grow light daikon radishes. The fermented garlic ingredient is from 2024.   Saturday April 18th. Garden journal notes. The perennial nettle plant is wonderful. This harvest aspired to be steamed with sambal kelapa spiced carrots. This is an early green for southern Minnesota. Also the plant spreads aggressively by shallow runners and deep runners.   Sunday, April 12th. The bloodroot plant is a lovely sign of spring. The plants make happy colonies, spreading by rhizomes and seed dispersal. The pollinators appreciate the early blossoms.
