The comet's tail is twisted and broken! #Comet C/2025 R3 (PANSTARRS) in early morning twilight, 18 April ... as seen from the mountains of southern New Mexico at 9,400 feet. A comet's tail is a good indicator of the solar magnetic field environment. Changes in field strength and direction show up in the tail's shape. The comet is now so low that I really can't capture it, except in bright twilight. Therefore, my goal this morning was to image the tail just befo...

Evening trio - The crescent moon, Venus, and the Pleiades...in three views as twilight progresses. First view captures the moon and Venus, but it was still too bright for the Pleiades. The band of orange-yellow twilight sky gives lots of contrast to the rest of the sky. Second view is a close look at Venus and the moon. Earthshine is obvious on the rest of the moon's disk. Third view captures the blue stars of the Pleiades as twilight gets darker. #NewMexico #Photography #Astrophotog...

#Comet C/2025 R3 (PANSTARRS) in early twilight, 16 April ... as seen from the mountains of southern New Mexico at 9,400 feet. This was taken on a fixed tripod. No star tracker. It's a stack of 71 2.5 second exposures, 135mm lens, APS-C camera. In big binoculars the comet is a pretty sight, but not a "Great Comet" level of 'wow'. The tail is easily visible in binocs in a dark sky. The comet is moving lower in the sky day by day, about 1.5 to 2 degrees...

Grass fires raging in Nebraska. This is a time-lapse sequence, in infrared, of the state of Nebraska. It's reverse polarity, so the hot fires are black, and high-altitude cold cirrus clouds are white. The sequence starts in late morning of 12 March and continues to sunset of 13 March. On the 12th the surface winds were very strong and drove the fires dozens of miles to the southeast. As sunset came, the wind direction changed and drove the fires to the south. Overnight the winds were...

@Jazone@theforkiverse.com From the news article: "In other races, Jeremy Paul Lenentine and Bob Tyler ran unopposed to win seats on Rio Rancho’s city council for Districts 2 and 3 respectively." Rio Rancho is a fairly large city, but some city council seats were uncontested? I can understand that in smaller cities like Alamogordo, but Rio Rancho? Greetings from southern New Mexico.

A very full moon rises on March 2nd as the sun sets. In about 9 hours the moon will be totally eclipsed. For New Mexico maximum eclipse will be around 4:30AM, but totality lasts for about one hour. @ipxfong@mastodon.sdf.org @Hawaii@mastodon.world I have a Sony NEX-5, and I use Darktable to open it's raw/.arw format images into GIMP. I certainly don't use all the possibilities of GIMP. If you save your images as .jpg, you lose some of the dynamic range that is helpful in tough lighting situations. (Later, I got two Sony a6300 bodies. The low noise performance is better for astrophotography, and one of them is modded with all the filters in front of the sensor removed...so the s...

@goatrodeo@mstdn.social Thanks! I do photograph the moon often...thin crescent in the evening sky, full moon rising as the sun sets, etc. I've done it enough that I look at my photos and sigh: another cliche moon shot?! You gotta find something new in them, lol!

@Fabirucho Set an alarm to get up early. This eclipse happens in the early morning, before sunrise, before morning twilight.

@Fabirucho I will try to get photos of the rising moon tomorrow, March 2nd. Just as the moon will rise tomorrow, the sun will be just 1 degree above the horizon. The sunlight will illuminate the foreground for a balanced photo. On March 3rd the moon will rise after the sun has set. The moon will be bright, and the foreground will be very dark...silhouettes in any photo. That will make photos very different compared to 24 hours earlier.

@Fabirucho Thank you! It was time well spent outside to capture these moments.
