  #MagicInTheMundane This oily residue on the beach reflected all the colours when it seeped onto a puddle left by the receding tide. Kind of sad because it’s oil on a beach, fortunately just a small patch.

  Can we all stop using and recommending peat based composts please? It takes so long to make, peat is a non renewable source It does far more good storing carbon in the ground in situ than it ever will do in a garden, yes, even for growing food. I’ve just seen a website recommending using peat based compost😭 Peat was introduced as a cheaper filler for compost mixes within the lifetime of people alive today. It was not always used. We can switch away #Gardening #ClimateDiary

  I don’t know if this is #MagicInTheMundane because I think plants are amazing always, but there are a lot of leaves newly unfurled just now (Northern Hemisphere) This was a phone photo with the sun shining through from behind the leaf, so much going on when you look at the detail. #leaf #phonePhoto

  I’m not too strong on history, but on reading an “on this day” I realise I have a fixed point (of about 100 years) that European history is divided by in my head. It’s the “before/after potatoes” divide. That old guy that did a thing? He lived without eating potatoes. Skirrets were the winter storage starch before potatoes and it took 50-100 years before potatoes gradually ousted skirrets after their introduction. No potatoes- can you imagine? #skirrets #potatoes

  Spotted this lichen and moss covered branch on a small tree at the side of the path when we popped out at lunchtime for a quick walk to see the sun at the top of the hill behind the village. Lots of life vying for a toehold on the branch. #LichenSubscribe #mosstodon

  Gave away some more perennial leeks yesterday (they had set themselves in the path from dropped bulbils). My fiendish plan of supplying the whole of Fife (and as far beyond as I can) with perennial veg continues!   Knitters of Mastodon: the enamel on my metal needles is wearing off at the points, any ideas about the best way to stop the ragged edges from catching the wool I’m knitting? I’ve given it one coat of clear nail varnish which has helped a bit, but it’s not smooth yet. I’d like to keep the needles, as they were my Granny’s #Knitting #Wool

  Weird day. Road closures on the main route made for an empty (relatively) car-less cycle to work (including a detour) Saw people walking in the middle of the closed road, we were cycling without stress. I could even do some roadside botanising & admire the trees that I’m usually too “head down, get up that hill” busy to appreciate. It was like living in a solar punk future for a while.   Weird (cool) thing spotted today. I’d noticed one of my sundews (Drosera binata) was a bit overwhelmed by the sphagnum moss it was growing in, with leaves still below the surface of the moss. I removed the top growth of the moss and found that the leaves had started growing new plantlets from the ends. I’d not seen that before with Sundews. Excellent bit of vegetative propagation. New plants in new homes and old plant free from the moss. #Sundew #Drosera #propagation #InsectivorousPlant

  Blossom time! The cherry plum is still flowering, the cherry is peak blossom and the blackthorn is joining in too. The prunus are having their moment in the sun. The bumble bees are enjoying the flowers even in this wind today. #Blossom #Blackthorn

  Look, All I want is for everyone to be respected, fed and housed and their needs met. For the environment cared for and also respected for it’s role in our survival. For jobs not to be extractive, and provide enough free time for people to thrive. For trees to line every street. For public transport to be easy and the first choice for almost every journey.
