Bronze Age Greece had a robust trading economy. Sea routes were (obviously) favored over land routes. https://www.worldhistory.org/article/115/trade-in-ancient-greece/ Interesting stuff, this. We seldom think about ancient economies, rather viewing things through our modern lens. Often, we're mistaken. #Odyssey #HomericGreece #BronzeAgeTrade

Question for sari-wearers: How do you clean them? I have three, all polyester, two very sheer like chiffon, one heavier like silk. All have metallic thread embroidery, and one is beaded. None have care information (no surprise there). They've been in storage for a few years, along with some stretch velvet cholis. I haven't worn them in . . . I don't know, maybe twelve years? I was in the SCA at the time, and they were super comfortable for scorching summertime events. I'm cons...

Did yard work this morning: mowed, trimmed, clipped, and hauled away. Went back out a bit ago to gather up branches spouse trimmed along the road and driveway and haul them out too. Picked another handful of black raspberries to add to what I already had, in order to make a sugar-free raspberry sorbet. Almost time for that to go into the ice cream maker. A simple five-spice salmon for dinner, a vegetable side (likely green beans), and sorbet for after. Perhaps a bit of mulberry liqueur while...

One for the "careful writers" (to steal from Theodore Bernstein): COMPOSE and COMPRISE are not interchangeable in the formal register. Some writers maintain the distinction regardless of the formality they're using. I tend to let it go when I see one used incorrectly in dialogue; when I see it in narrative, I leave a comment. It's up to the client whether to change the word. "Compose" means "to make up, to be an ingredient/portion i...

An evergreen diction note: PALATE is the noun meaning one's taste literally or figuratively, or the roof of the mouth (hard palate, soft palate). PALLET is the noun meaning a thin pad for sleeping (a pallet of straw) or a platform of wood used in warehouses (a stack of pallets). PALETTE is the noun meaning a grouping of colors (the dining room palette of dove gray, lavender, and sage green) or the board on which a painter places colors to use in a given piece. #Diction #WordChoice

There's a hole in the kitchen wall now. They'll cover the outside, of course, but we'll have to decide what to do about the interior. It's neat, though, to see the construction. This was the 1847 cabin that they moved in 1851 and built the limestone house onto. And this is the man who built it. #HomeImprovement #HomeMaintenance #DefinitelyNotDIY

UPDATE: Partial siding on west wall! It's proven a bit more tricky than anticipated, I think, but better them than us. The main dude will be back tomorrow morning bright and early to keep on truckin'. We agree that he should tackle the south wall next, as it's more difficult than the north (that one has no openings to deal with as we're just "boarding it up" as it were) what with the window and door. So glad to be getting this done! #HomeImpr...

Right out of the gate this morning, while reading the news (I know, I know, I got curious about an archaeological find), I see this: an ewe No. No, no, no. HELL no. Just because a word begins with a noun does NOT mean it needs "an" before it instead of "a." It's all about the sound. If there's a vowel sound, use "a." If there's a consonant sound, use "an." A ewe. A. Because "ewe&quot...

Looking at the predicted low temps for the next two weeks. I wonder when I'll be able to plant the raised beds this year. That soil sure won't be warm enough by Mother's Day, at this rate. Grrr. #Gardening #ILWX

I am a big fan of semicolons. They create a tighter relationship between items than a comma can. "The book was from another life and she set it down." The guideline says we should use a comma before that "and," because there are two independent clauses (grammatically complete thoughts) there. However, using a semicolon makes a stronger connection. "The book was from another life, and she set it down." (That's good, and it follows...

I have, this afternoon, ordered a five-disc set of Tibetan bells and singing bowl audio. Years ago i had two of them. Those went missing at some point, so now I'm getting the whole set. Henry Wolff and Nancy Hemmings traveled to Tibet and Nepal in 1969 to collect the sacred sounds. I look forward to hearing them, either again or for the first time. #TibetanBuddhism #SacredSound

Mmmmmm Chicken fajitas for dinner. Season chicken. Cook in skillet. Remove. Do NOT wipe skillet. Add sliced peppers and onion. Sauté, adding seasoning as needed (probably not a lot). Put chicken back in, stir. Cook a few more minutes so there's no pink left. FEAST #HomeCooking

Good T-storms rolled through last night, starting around bedtime (10PM for us) and continuing until the wee hours or thereabouts. I was asleep for most of the later ones. Since we've had those huge old trees taken down, we rest easier when there are high winds. It's almost soothing again. Except for the hail. #SpringStorms
