False claims of illegal obscenity for minors, inclusion of #LGBTQIA+ characters or themes, & covering topics of #race, #racism, #equity, & #socialjustice are the common justifications for #censorship of a #library book. Today’s the start of #BannedBooksWeek. Check out this year’s Top 11 Most Challenged #Books at https://bannedbooksweek.org/ And if you choose to buy one of them, please consider bookshop.org instead of Amazon. What’s unsettling about calling the #ICE killing of #RenéeGood “another #GeorgeFloyd moment” is how quickly #Black pain gets repackaged into a generic template for “state violence,” especially when the victim is #White. George Floyd’s murder was a specifically anti‑Black terror event in a long history of #racist policing; treating it as a floating metaphor for any shocking killing in Minneapolis feels like Black erasure even when the intent is solidarity. #BLM #BlackMastodon

In a twist on #bookbanning, a liberal #NJ school dist. struggling w/ a #mentalhealth crisis pulls a book w/an attempted #suicide. They should’ve listened to author Junot Díaz: “I resist the idea that there's something supremely deterministic, or supremely dangerous, about #art. Art in fact holds people in conversations, acts to limit or to reduce the sense of isolation & loneliness, it raises difficult topics in order to deepen our understanding & build up our resilience...

I love this #TV show so much it’s STUPID. For all the #women who’ve ever been underestimated, subjugated, or used but still have fight left in them, #RiotWomen is for you. It’s hilarious & unflinching, the lead singer’s voice is electric & whoever wrote the #punk band’s songs is a friggin’ genius. I guarantee you this is the 1st time people all over the world are belting out a song about #menopause. Trust me…watch it, & you will, too🎸 #music #England https://www.bbc.co...

EVERYONE, no matter your political ideology, should be freaking out about widespread #elections interference THIS YEAR. Not the made up scourge of non-citizens voting, but the #voterID #SAVEAmericaAct which would require a birth certificate/passport to vote. It will disenfranchise millions of eligible citizens, especially #seniors, #POCs, #students & low‑income voters, deepening turnout gaps & #votersuppression. If passed it goes into effect immediately. #Democracy #news https://...

In case you missed it, this week #Afroman prevailed over the cops who raided his home using a trumped up drug warrant, & even snatched some of his money, then tried to sue him for defamation when he wrote some songs about it. His security cameras caught their bad behavior including one officer’s titillation w/ a cake in his kitchen. Ironically it was the officers’ lawsuit that made the ‘Lemon Pound Cake’ raid video go viral. #funny #BLM https://www.npr.org/2026/03/19/nx-s1-5753563/afro...

#BREAKING #News: The #UnitedNations General Assembly has voted to recognize the enslavement of Africans during the transatlantic slave trade as "the gravest crime against humanity", a move advocates hope will pave the way for healing and justice. Note: #UN GA resolutions are not legally binding, though they carry the weight of global opinion. #BlackMastodon #BLM https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cvg06q36052o
