• One step closer to the destruction of online free speech and device ownership.

  The KIDS Act just passed the House and it’s on to the Senate now. Assuming this passes, it’ll mark the end of online free speech and device ownership in the US. Contact your Senators about it while you still can, I just got through writing both of mine.

  What happened to free speech rights? They just don’t exist anymore?

• Called it months ago.

  So, I called it four months ago, but the Mac Pro is officially dead. Here’s the post in which I called that the Mac Pro was dead, only now it’s official and Apple’s discontinuing it.

• A literal new 'SOPA' exists now.

  So, these pricks aren’t even hiding their intentions now, literally naming a new censorship bill, ‘SOPA,’ thinking people forgot about that failed 2012 bill that would’ve destroyed the web as we know it had it passed. Greeeat…

• The Voting Rights Act is dead.

  So, SCOTUS just killed the Voting Rights Act. Greeat.

• Goodbye device ownership, and the last vestiges of free speech will die with this bill as well.

  So, OS-level age-gating is going federal, which will effectively kill your rights to device ownership and what’s left of free speech and expression. Enjoy your free speech while you still have it because this is a clear attempt to erase that right. SOPA never died, it just went into hiding until time to reemerge, and now’s that time, this is basically SOPA in a save the kids trenchcoat.

  Well, high-pressure, scummy sales tactics and preying on the disadvantaged (people getting duped into buying a $1k+ or $2k+ overpriced appliance, ala Kirby or Rainbow, is a thing that happens) are the main problems with door-to-door sales.

  Systemd is pushing age-gating at the init level, which means 99% of all distros will be age-gated. Also, Amutable wants to add Android-style attestation to systemd, which means if they get their way, the majority of Linux will be as locked down as Android as far as telling you what and what not to install for apps.   Alt-init distros exist but it’s only a matter of time before either they’re screwed or age-gating goes down to firmware or hardware level.

However, what’s gonna happen should the attempts to age-gate the XDG portal screw over alt-init distros like Artix too? My guess is maybe they start blocking regions which force age gating like Arch Linux 32 is doing.
