Never forget, a 13-year study found that protected bike-lanes led to a drastic decline in fatalities for all road users. ALL ROAD USERS. What about painted bike-lanes? No safety improvement at all. For sharrows, it’s actually safer to NOT have them. Via @Streetsblog@mastodon.world https://usa.streetsblog.org/2019/05/29/protect-yourself-separated-bike-lanes-means-safer-streets-study-says

As Canada awaits the Alberta separation referendum results, let’s remember how stupid this all is. Huge public money spent on a Russian & American-fuelled separation movement for an awfully-written and badly managed unbinding referendum on whether to hold a binding referendum that would be illegal.

Don’t forget this. “Foreign actors are attempting to undermine Canadian interests by interfering in Alberta's separatist debate…” “Actors from Russia and the US are attempting to promote separatist ideas in what researchers behind the report described as a threat to Canada's democratic integrity.” https://www.bbc.com/news/articles/cze2dnn8kgwo

Don’t buy the lie about a war on cars. They’ve been waging a WAR ON WALKING for a century. Once we open our eyes to the damage done by the #WarOnWalking, it’s impossible NOT to see it. And when we finally try to improve things, giving more options for people to get around our cities, and decreasing car DEPENDENCY, they have the audacity to claim that’s a #WarOnCars. All these are true: 1. FIFA is awful and corrupt. 2. The #WorldCup is a fantastic event despite #FIFA. 3. Co-hosting in Canada isn’t worth the outrageous costs/conditions FIFA demands, especially with few physical legacies. 4. Vancouver has done a fantastic job leveraging outcomes for the city.

This iconic Fabian Todorovic cartoon is still one of the best I’ve seen at illustrating the remarkable amount of space we surrender to cars, leaving little space left for everyone and everything else. The text added later makes the bonus point that many drivers still manage to complain about it.

“Air pollution fell substantially as Paris restricted car traffic and made way for parks, people-streets and bike-lanes.” Better for the climate, better for health, better for livability and quality of life. Common sense. Such a no-brainer, it’s remarkable that more cities HAVEN’T done the same. https://www.washingtonpost.com/climate-solutions/2025/04/12/air-pollution-paris-health-cars/

“During the 1950s-60s, the rise in automobile traffic transformed Dutch cities, resulting in traffic congestion, pollution, & an alarming increase in crashes. In 1971, more than 3,300 people lost their lives in crashes, including 400 children. These shocking numbers led to public protests…” Change. https://nowsustainability.com/the-bicycle-revolution-in-the-netherlands-how-cycling-transformed-the-country/

IMPORTANT STUDY: “On average, the implementation of 30 km/h speed limits in European cities demonstrated a 23%, 37%, and 38% reduction in road crashes, fatalities, and injuries respectively. Lower speed limits also yielded environmental benefits, with emissions decreasing on average by 18%, and fuel consumption by 7%, indicating enhanced fuel efficiency and reduced environmental impact.” https://www.nrso.ntua.gr/review-of-city-wide-30-kmh-speed-limit-benefits-in-europe-may-2024/

“Electric cars are no more dangerous for pedestrians than petrol and diesel models, researchers find.” They’re also no safer. Which reminds us that “better cars” aren’t the main answer to the consequences of cars. The main answer is fewer (and smaller) cars driven less frequently in better cities. https://www.leeds.ac.uk/research-32/news/article/5900/evs-just-as-safe-for-pedestrians
