@anxious_opposition I don't know your life... but looking at your picture I don't think you are.

@juliank please explain this moral imperative. What is it? What is its moral basis? what else other than llms would it apply to?

@jilleduffy I would contact a trust and estate lawyer. many are likely to be willing to give you this info for free. As a lawyer, I would *never* trust information like this from an llm. I don't trust legal responses from an llm in my own field, using specialized llms; this is a high-stakes question and the reader does not have the expertise to identify errors or double check them. shit, I was just That Guy, wasn't I. sorry.

@troy_frizzell @bluewave_kiwi @mastodonmigration oh! thank you for the definition. I was thinking that is the only context I know for that acronym, and it couldn't possibly mean that, so.. :-)

@nahuellofeudo @thomasfuchs "you can't keep going up forever, so at some point you will come down." that's true, my friend. but sometimes you come down a hill back to the level you started. and sometimes at the top of the peak you go off a cliff.

@regina_nyckelharpista it is literally the patriarchy. we have ONE ACTUAL ADVANTAGE over you - our clothes have pockets, therefore you need to ask us to help you carry things. if women's clothes had pockets you would soon realize we serve no actual purpose and then we'd be in trouble.

@regina_nyckelharpista that was originally why kilts were invented.

@smutmag I agree with every single thing you say, but on top of that, R+J has, hands down, the best writing of any of Shakespeare's plays. two of my favorite speeches ("these violent delights have violent ends" and "I see Queen Mab hath been with you"), Romeo and Juliet's initial meeting is a contender for my favorite scene anywhere in Shakespeare, and... Mercutio. and Tybalt. (I have seen two performances of the play where the actors played th...

@smutmag and Romeo and Juliet is so much more universal. and SHOCKINGLY feminist. I had probably seen it 20 times before I saw a version where Juliet climbs down off the balcony rather than Romeo climbing up to it, and it recontextualized the entire play for me. I reread it, and Juliet is really clearly portrayed as the smarter of the two, the one who is leading the relationship while Romeo is struggling just to keep up. she talks absolute circles around him... good thing the boy is pretty!

@RickiTarr I am a tax lawyer who frequently consults for ultra wealthy people trying leave text jurisdictions. with California's proposed one-time wealth tax being the one exception in my career, people NEVER leave because of tax increases. I want to make this clear. NEVER. not one single time in my career. people DO leave because they are about to make a gigantic amount of income - selling their company, usually - and don't want to pay tax on $100m in New York, so they move...

@PallasRiot I don't think that's the threat. this is the only time I've ever heard that proposed as a problem, and as you point out, it really isn't.
-
Post #4121790
@JHein @RickiTarr as a state and local tax lawyer who consults extensively on these issues, I can tell you for absolute certain that millionaires or billionaires hear about tax rates raising, they call my office, talk to us for a while, decide moving is not worth the energy, and don't do it.
-
Post #4121789
@PallasRiot to go to a different country or state and take the tax money they pay with them. that's the threat.
-
Post #4121788
@PallasRiot but you think "I will take my factory to a different state" is? what do I know, I'm just a state and local tax lawyer who works on this issue pretty much every day...

@PallasRiot sigh. maybe go back and read the post you responded to. anyway, have a good day.

@gleick that being said, if it were used properly, that is a beautifully poetic phrase.

@MugsysRapSheet unfortunately, this isn't correct. the pied a terre tax is still being debated and is not part of the NYC budget.

@Beachbum @MugsysRapSheet I'm a state and local tax lawyer. Analyzing the laws around what it takes for a wealthy person to move from one location to another for tax purposes is literally what I do for a living. people move out of state because they're about to see a huge income event - ie you're worth 5m but are about to sell your company for 100m, so you move to Florida. OTOH, when tax rates go up, people ASK about moving, but then stay put. 100 PERCENT OF THE TIME.

@MugsysRapSheet ... okay? agreed? 100%? do you have any other non sequiturs you'd like to bring up?

@atlovato @fesshole ... why? it's so British to serve something good at a party but expect people to go for the shitty option...

@AkaSci also, that judges should get to determine when the proper "conditions" exist for the legislature to legislate.

@PhoenixWright @benroyce if it means nothing to you, you need to pay more attention and educate yourself. it's a you problem.

@PhoenixWright @benroyce again, as long as you understand that point of view is 100% a you problem, go for it!

@benroyce maga does not have core beliefs other than obedience to the cult leader. this will not matter at all.
