Like, the only way a secret ballot makes a difference is if you have a bunch of Republican senators who politically need to feign loyalty to Trump but in private will do the right thing. But then the secret tally isn’t going to track what legislators are saying publicly. That’s… a problem!

If the public & private numbers don’t jive, people are—totally reasonably!—going to regard that as suspicious and illegitimate. If they DO line up, why did you need a secret ballot?
