Over fifteen years ago, I decided to have a Tetris and Dr. Mario party and invited my friends and some coworkers.
One of my coworkers said he couldn’t go because it was his best friend’s birthday party, but said that his best friend lived in the same city so he might try to stop by after. I jokingly said “bring your friends!” and didn’t think about it again.
At some point during my party, long after I had annihilated all of my friends in Tetris, my coworker walked in with some of his friends and the last one to walk in was this cute chubby indie guy with dark hair and black glasses which is pretty much my “thing” as far as things go.
I took my coworker and his friends on a tour of my apartment BECAUSE I’M WEIRD and then he and his friends started playing Nintendo.
I was all Nintendo-ed out by then, so I started talking to the cute chubby guy and he mentioned it was his birthday and my heart SANK.
I was just sitting there thinking about how this poor guy just had to leave HIS OWN BIRTHDAY PARTY where he actually had a Wii to go over to some random girl’s house and she only had an 8-bit Nintendo (though it was a special top-loading edition and very cool, so at least there’s that).
He was really nice and said it was totally fine and mentioned it wasn’t a big deal because he LIVED AROUND THE BLOCK.
I was shocked. It’s wasn’t like my neighborhood was bustling with random indie kids, especially ones in their twenties, so I asked if I could see where he lived and we LEFT MY OWN PARTY to go to his.
His apartment was seriously just around the corner, no more than 500 feet from mine and I was thinking “how have I never seen this person before?”
When he opened the door to his apartment, it was super cute and really clean and nicely decorated and he had bowls set out with things like chips, pretzels, salsa, dip, etc. and I was reminded that I had RUINED THIS POOR GUY’S BIRTHDAY PARTY and apologized again and tried to make awkward conversation about how nice it was that he left pretzels out for his guests when I hadn’t thought to do that for mine.
He again reassured me it was totally fine, but then looked down at the bowl of pretzels and said something like “I have no idea what I’m going to do with all of those pretzels. I don’t even like pretzels, but I got them because other people do.”
It took me a long time to tell @KevBot@beige.party I loved him, but it all started at that exact moment because it was such a simple yet selfless gesture, and it pretty much defines exactly who he is and everything that I love about him.

Aww lovely.
Our 31st wedding anniversary was last month. The story of our meeting is a bit different. I'd recently moved to France aged 25 and was in a nightclub sitting on a settee above the sunken dancefloor, looking cool in my flowery Italian shirt (and not dancing because I lose all rhythm as soon as I stand up).
Anyway, there was this absolutely stunning woman gliding around the dancefloor with a grace that took my breath away. You know, the sort that is several orders of magnitude out of your league. She saw me lighting a cigarette (pretty coolly, if I say so myself) and approached with a cigarette for a light. She then tripped on the stair and landed head first in my crotch. Been together nearly 34 years now 😁
