@guilevi@dragonscave.space Thanks for mentioning this. I have never thought about it how important picture descriptions can be. I will take care about that in the future for everything I publish.

@guilevi@dragonscave.space Yes yes yes! Image descriptions are a blessing! I've described every image on my account, and Image descriptions are required by rule on RaRu.Re !!

@guilevi@dragonscave.space In addition, people can follow @PleaseCaption@botsin.space (and let the bot follow them back) to get a reminder if they post an image without description.

@guilevi@dragonscave.space Hi. Actually I don't put description on the images I toot there, usually because they're just funny ones and it stops being funny if it has to be described/explained so the extra work seems pointless to me. Would you consider that acceptable ? When do you believe it is important to describe images ?

@guilevi@dragonscave.space if I could get some text to speech software working I could help even more

@joaopinheiro@zotum.net 2021-05-11 08:57
And this short post has made me understand much better the need for an image description than many other attempts I have come across many times. Sometimes it's hard for those that don't have the problem to understand it, specially if people, instead of asking politely and explaining things, reply harshly as if you're the worst person in the world because you didn't write a description. Thank you!

@guilevi@dragonscave.space I remember when I first got here how freaking blown away I was by that. It was such a weird novelty. But I’ve been here awhile now. Just wait, you’ll get so used to it in time you won’t blink anymore. It’s wild.

@guilevi@dragonscave.space Glad I am able to help. Do you have any tips or comments regarding image descriptions? like what is something people often forget to describe or describe inadequately?
-
@Vhalesa@mastodon.art 2021-05-11 11:20
@guilevi@dragonscave.space For some of my comics instead of a image description I wrote it into a written version of the story. Is this a thing more people do? Because I think that's more enjoyable to read? But may be a bit long since the word limit for image descriptions is quite long, haha.

@vilbi@bonn.social 2021-05-11 12:08
@guilevi@dragonscave.space and the pro aspect of image descriptions, you can add additional information over the default 500 character limit of mastodon ;-)

@guilevi@dragonscave.space I don't post many images, but when I do I always try to add a description. I never did it on the birdsite, I admit. I didn't even know it could be done

@El_joa@todon.nl 2021-05-11 13:34
@guilevi@dragonscave.space Very nice to notice your toot get so many boost! 395 as of now - I add one more. 😃

@guilevi@dragonscave.space thanks for offering your perspective in these replies. I'm always looking for blind people's perspectives, thanks for being open to answering questions! That's all lol. I have several videos saved on YouTube to explain how blind people navigate the internet, but being able to ask questions one on one is great! I know it's a bit annoying to explain how you navigate the internet without sight. Thanks for letting us seeing ppl ask and learn. :)

@guilevi@dragonscave.space I enjoy writing the image descriptions. I'm happy to help out those that need it and it's also like a fun little easter egg to those that don't and take the time to read the image description. Sometimes there's even a little more detail or a silly joke or something that isn't in the main post.
-
@wx1g@mastodon.radio 2021-05-11 20:57
@guilevi@dragonscave.space I'm also a blind person, and very-much appreciate the image descriptions! Twitter and Facebook are sadly lacking in this. The nags, on these platforms, aren't helping.
-
@radonhawk@cybre.club 2021-05-11 21:41
@guilevi@dragonscave.space I will try to do it more often, I sometimes forget to do it (bad habit)
-
@TerrorBite@meow.social 2021-05-12 01:14
@guilevi@dragonscave.space I've tried to describe most of the images that I post. I know people who will refuse to boost an image post if the image doesn't have a description.
-
@Ayior@mastodon.art 2021-05-12 19:01
@guilevi@dragonscave.space As an artist, I found that I often have an extra layer of fun trying to describe what the hell I just drew, it can actually be hard sometimes :D
-
@amatecha@merveilles.town 2021-05-13 06:51
@guilevi@dragonscave.space ah nice. some clients have the option to basically nag you if you don't add alt text to image attachments. I have that turned on in my clients of course!
-
@dhfir@expired.mentality.rip 2021-05-14 17:48
@guilevi@dragonscave.space huh. I should start doing that when I upload images, I suppose.
-
@vesperto@mastodon.social 2021-05-16 09:50
@guilevi@dragonscave.space that's probably client-dependant, I don't think I've ever seen an alt field for image uploads (but I'll be on the lookout).
-
@Preston@merveilles.town 2021-05-22 01:04
@guilevi@dragonscave.space I will start doing that thank you for letting me know of this feature
-
@FreebieBean@mastodon.social 2022-04-29 12:58
@guilevi@dragonscave.space I had no idea this feature was a thing and available, but what a great idea! To bore you, my profile picture is a cat merged with my face, which was made for me, a long time ago by @quebectango@mstdn.social Yesterday I posted my first photo (but not my last) of my beautiful little Beddy Whippet Elsie, standing on a rough hewn bench, with her head cocked, lovingly to the side. I was singing "hey if you happen to see the most beautiful girl in the world" to her, hence the cocked head, poor baby.

@ericskilling@mastodon.online 2022-04-29 13:07
@guilevi@dragonscave.space Not only that. It gives me the opportunity to inject humour into the alt text that blind people can appreciate and laugh at. Alt text can be description and silly.

@meer_salt@mastodon.green 2022-04-29 13:42
@guilevi@dragonscave.space one of the things I like about this place is that it tells me to do this whenever I post a picture, it’s something I like to do and having that reminder helps reinforce the discipline of doing it. I mainly post nature pictures, and enjoy the challenge of writing the descriptions.
-
@dianalizia@writing.exchange 2022-04-29 13:53
@guilevi@dragonscave.space Thank you for this reminder and I'll make sure to be more descriptive when I post images.
-
@belghast@mstdn.social 2022-04-29 16:16
@guilevi@dragonscave.space I am exceptionally thankful for the checkbox that is "remind me I did not set one" effectively. Gives me that pause to go back and write one in because it isn't second nature yet.
-
@eseprimo@mathstodon.xyz 2022-04-29 16:56
@guilevi@dragonscave.space Guilty! Question: is there any kind of standard to describe a math diagram? (graphs of functions, lattices of groups, geometric problems...)
-
@dantescanline@ni.hil.ist 2022-04-30 08:30
@guilevi@dragonscave.space it took me becoming disabled myself to really realize how important this is, how little effort it takes on the parts of others and how much it opens up for the people it's useful to. i love that it's a standard cultural practice on here, and i get a kick out of seeing how people describe different memes in their own ways.
-
@kanrei@mastodon.art 2022-04-30 15:48
@guilevi@dragonscave.space I wasn't even aware that I could add those descriptions. (I mean I did here, because it was pointed out. But usually I post with an app, and I don't really see there an option to add image descriptions. I see that Twitter has the option to add descriptions too. But yeah I wonder how other social media apps are, and whether because of that people might not add description.)
-
@Yuvalne@433.world 2022-04-30 16:32
@guilevi@dragonscave.space I removed the boost on this one just so I can boost it again. This shit is important.
-
@librarianguish@mastodon.social 2022-04-30 16:44
@guilevi@dragonscave.space I post a lot of images and am taking the time to add descriptions to every one of them. It's tricky sometimes but I know I'll get better at it as I do more. Most of all, I'm glad it's making a difference for you and so many other people.
-
@asep@mas.to 2022-04-30 20:06
@guilevi@dragonscave.space that is good to know, thank you
-
@killyourfm@layer8.space 2022-04-30 21:14
@guilevi@dragonscave.space I don't do this enough, but I'll start making a better effort.
-
@vwbusguy@mastodon.online 2022-04-30 22:02
@guilevi@dragonscave.space It is a lot more intuitive how to add alt text in Mastodon.
-
@thomkennon@mastodon.social 2022-05-01 18:33
@guilevi@dragonscave.space I shamefully never did it til coming here last week. Now I try to *always* do it.
-
@stevefox@writing.exchange 2022-05-01 20:15
@guilevi@dragonscave.space yeah - just did it yesterday. It’s super easy to do, too, with the mobile apps.
-
@mcfly@chaos.social 2022-05-01 20:41
@guilevi@dragonscave.space i have come for a lot of reasons to the belief that mastodon, the fediverse is how social media should be. So many things are better here.
-
@druid@mastodon.green 2022-05-01 20:48
@guilevi@dragonscave.space It's not something I did until coming to Mastodon a few days ago and I must say that I'm rather enjoying doing so. It's making me look at my own photos from a new perspective. This also fits really well with me as a practitioner of mindfulness.
-
@neckspike@mastodon.social 2022-05-01 20:48
@guilevi@dragonscave.space mastodon definitely makes it a lot easier/faster to do so, and lets me adjust the focus point of the thumbnail from the same menu!
