And now, after banning vaguely-defined "LLM-generated code", Codeberg bans cryptocurrency projects. Discussion: https://codeberg.org/Codeberg/org/pulls/1254 The specific ban is for "Content that harms the reputation of Codeberg, such as cryptocurrency related projects". https://codeberg.org/Codeberg/org/commit/f383b648fd733ab88083dc390b91e77cd7589980 I think the reputation of Codeberg has been now harmed enough. When I originally escaped GitHub, I chose Codeberg exactly for the ethical stance and values. For me, anti-censorship is a non-negotiable ethical value. The folks at Codeberg have the right to run their org as they want. However, having now shown that they consider "censorship" good when it's about things they dislike, this made clear that their values and mine are not compatible (even if I dislike those same things, mind you). Supporters of this ban say that this "draws a line", that "is not meant to be applied blanket-wide to all projects, only those which are harmful to the community", as if having constantly to worry about the next mood swing of Codeberg voting members were an acceptable Sword of Damocles for any reputable project. What's next? Banning US users? Banning software aligned with "capital-fascist" values? Open-source banking/wallet apps? Quantum computing tools? Robotics? I'm moving off Codeberg, probably to Radicle. But I feel a bit sad, because Codeberg had the potential, in my opinion, to become the European alternative to GitHub, and they have made clear that they are not ready nor willing to become so. Which is fine: software is political, and everyone has the right to express their political stance. But we still desperately need an alternative to GitHub. #codeberg #drama #github #radicle #politics #opensource #bigtech #eu #europe #europa #usa #digitalsovereignty #ethics #censorship #crypto #web3 #blockchain #ai #llm #vibecoding

@tomgag@infosec.exchange I would perhaps frame this as "pro-human" more than anything; Codeberg has since day 1 been fighting people who see a free platform and abuse it. In the beginning, it was malware / rootkit type folks who descended and it gave them a bad rep. They had to fight to close major security holes in Gitea. The reality: Codeberg gets abused by people with ill intent. Running infrastructure to support that is costly in all manners, and has to be fought. LLMs are already scraping it to death.

  • @tomgag@infosec.exchange I agree. Thanks for speaking up. There is much positive feedback about the move to ban LLM code on #codeberg. It risks strengthening liberal big tech by leaving it dominant. I use LLMs to help build tested #nixos #flakes that run my machines, yet I now worry my fleet setup processes using codeberg could be ruined by other's decisions. That is why dependence on large platforms is risky & this move has proven this. I use #radicle & #reticulum #rngit as a backup for Codeberg as it is flaky.

@tomgag@infosec.exchange Agreed. I perfectly understand Codeberg not wanting any LLM stuff for their own business, or any crypto for that matter, I have a hard time understanding banning hosting of such projects. It considerably (for the LLM part) reduces the scope of what Codeberg could be hosting, making it a gatekeeping/elitist community, and de-facto not a GitHub alternative anymore.

@tomgag@infosec.exchange not defending or anything, but this (comment) actually makes sense: https://codeberg.org/Codeberg/org/pulls/1254#issuecomment-19923979

@tomgag@infosec.exchange and the witch hunt begins. Tbh not surprised, something wrong with FOSS community, btw I have been recently criticised on some forum that I have chosen wrong licence for my project, I have chosen MIT and criticism was about not choosing GPL3. But on the other note, last few months I am thinking about project, having decentralised opensource LLMs training framework and community (something like seti@home decades ago) with some alignment with cryptocurrency like tokens so community cam share resources for future inference and share HW resources for community benefits (something like ethereum gas). So I believe this idea is making me their enemy no. 1 but this way we might be able to liberate LLMs to people and perhaps even doing it greener way than datacenters. The idea is to have trully free opensource (not open weight only) model with full transparency. But given the curent mood in opensource community it is more utopian than real project. :-(

  • @tomgag@infosec.exchange It was pretty clear from its founding that #Codeberg was an ideologically-charged platform; while I was excited to see a GitHub alternative, I kept with #GitLab for this reason, and I'm glad I did. No cryptocurrency-related projects allowed site-wide, lol.

@tomgag@infosec.exchange Thanks for the blog post - I do have a little bit more sympathy than you do for them banning cryptocurrency related projects. But it's true that it's difficult to define, and in the end, there probably are worse apps on their servers. I liked the final words of your blog: moving to radicle! I finally started checking it out, and it really looks awesome! It still misses a lot of stuff. But I hope it will grow over time!

@tomgag@infosec.exchange fine by me. It's not like with github, where it's "github or nothing". It's based on @forgejo@floss.social , so there must be other instances around?

@tomgag@infosec.exchange good for 'em to get rid of all these scam projects. They just waste bandwidth that is better used by real software
