Late to the party, but I really enjoyed Jane Harper’s 2016 mystery novel The Dry. What a debut! The story takes place in rural Victoria, Australia and she really conveys a different place and the people. Lovely writing, terrific descriptions, realistic-feeling dialogue. I listened to the audiobook, so Stephen Shanahan pronounced everything correctly for me. It won a bunch of awards. I’m going to watch the movie so I can see the country (it was filmed across 15 towns!) and hear more Australians talking.

If you liked Paul Murray’s 2023 The Bee Sting or Tana French’s In the Woods (2007) this is… similar, but completely different (all three are excellent in different ways.) Both French and Harper explore the idea of “What if a detective returns to their childhood community where something awful happened to them as children?”
