If you liked Paul Murray’s 2023 The Bee Sting or Tana French’s In the Woods (2007) this is… similar, but completely different (all three are excellent in different ways.) Both French and Harper explore the idea of “What if a detective returns to their childhood community where something awful happened to them as children?”

Don’t get me wrong, Dungeon Crawler Carl is fun and all, but a well-written novel, that’s a fine meal. And a mystery, done right, adds a layer of puzzle-solving and motivation that I prefer over mainstream non-drama novels that are so popular today (looking at you, Ann Pachet’s Whistler, ugh, DNF)
