OOC: Godzilla is a commentary on the destructive power of nuclear weapons and humankind's misguided belief that it can contain that power. At least, that's how I read it. You could also interpret Godzilla as an allegory for industrial warfare, environmental degradation, or just, like, a big-ass monster, but I think the nuclear cautionary tale is the best read.

@LRRRonEarth@beige.party @ndnd@beige.party There is also a potential reading of Godzilla as a powerful nature spirit such as you find in Japanese folk religion. Like a giant Totoro turned monstrous and destructive by humanity's actions. This chimes with the experience of the war years, when an ultranationalist military emperor cult had dominated Japan with an ideology that laid claim to traditional Japanese culture and used it to cause immense suffering and ultimate humiliation.
