UK science is the latest victim of the AI bubble. The Labour party has transferred funding from real science like astronomy to AI research for fear of "falling behind". A shame that the AI bubble has not popped yet - the larger it gets, the more victims it claims, like a metastasizing cancer.

@galaxy_map@mastodon.social Some funding schemes interpret "AI" very broadly and fund Bayesian projects. I have a PhD student starting in Sept focusing mostly on Bayesian phylogenetics and modelling (with a bit of machine learning classification) under such a scheme.

@galaxy_map@mastodon.social As long as the money does not go to #LLMs , but maybe to research to find out how crappy LLMs are, and to actual #machinelearning I am absolutely fine with this. It may actually propel advances in #astronomy , too.
