There’s a depressing human tendency (independent of position of the position on any political spectrum) to follow the following train of thought:
We have identified X as a problem.Y looks, on paper, like it would solve X.We will do Y!Hmm, we have observed that Y did not fix X.We must do Y more!It appears that Y is actually causing secondary effects that exacerbate X.Do even more Y! Look, our predictions from step 2 said Y will fix X!
