@ryansingel There are nice things about wordpress. * hosted option works decently * being opensource means you can move to self-hosting if necessary * upgrade process when self-hosting is extremely smooth & usually automatic * many plugins and themes, so you have full control to customize it to your needs & audience But yes, it's possible - and sometimes even encouraged - to go overboard on plugins. It gives you a level of control and ownership that a VC option would usually never consider.

@ryansingel Ghost was originally founded by a mysoginist abuser and abuse apologist, so it's not completely in the clear. But it's definitely better than substack.

@ryansingel WordPress.com has a newsletter service that's all managed hosting, no messing with plugins: https://wordpress.com/newsletter/ (disclosure: I work for the company that runs wp.com, though not on that side of it)

@ryansingel to note, you can add wordpress.com which manages the plugins so you're not entirely in that nightmare. ;)

@ryansingel Is there any still around that allows old farts like me who are still using Windows XP to post? Wordpress kicked us off at the beginning of the Covid lockdown, which was cruel, as we were not only cut off from seeing people face-to-face, but from communicating online too.

@ryansingel While I’m actually looking at moving off of WP to another indie solution, for people who aren’t going for a newsletter or membership service, WP remains a great indie option before getting too complicated IMO.

@ryansingel Thanks, this was really helpful in finding alternatives to move to.
