I have been a classical music nut since I was 10 years old. For years I had just assumed that Bruckner was given to the same histrionic excesses as Mahler, so I never bothered listening, until about a month ago, when I found used CDs of his 5th and 8th symphonies. Now I’m trying to make up for lost time. #ClassicalMusic

    @ossobuffo Check out his choral music! Much less grand in scale but very good stuff. I’d start with Locus iste, or Os justi, short a cappella pieces that are just gorgeous.

    @ossobuffo Anton Bruckner in music to me is like Stefan George in poetry: if anyone else were to do what they do, the boundary to kitsch and clicheed sentimentality would be breached. But these masters do the undoable and, miraculously, in their hands it becomes art.
