Unfortunately, the popular interpretation is one also favoured by Doctorow who has promoted the nonsense idea that “capitalism got worse” as the backbone of his theory, mostly rooted in the idea that the true problem we are experiencing right now is the inherent nature coming home to westerners, not that the exploitation and abuse are inherent in the system. Which is why I fucking hate “enshittification” as a concept as it absolves the system. It’s a distraction from what should be an awakening to the inequality we live under, and the need for global solidarity. https://merveilles.town/@lrhodes/116312657570944809

I deeply disagree with the final premise of this piece, because extending a framework of thought such that it’s incompatible with the original thinking is a pointless endeavour and enshittification exists as an anti-solidarity rhetoric, but the broader criticisms are exactly why I take issue with the whole analysis. The difference is my conclusion: enshittification isn’t real. https://tarakiyee.com/on-the-enshittification-of-audre-lorde-the-masters-tools-in-tech-discourse/

@maxine@hachyderm.io feel like deep down lots of people are operating on the level of belief that capitalism was doing great until around 2007 or so (the iphone!) and then suddenly Bad People made Bad Decisions that caused it all to start unraveling. "what no historical materialism does to a mf" etc
