If you had 60 minutes to present to the staff of a non-profit organization on "AI" and wanted them to think more critically about when they should use it (maybe even consider if they should use it at all 🤞) - what questions would you answer/ what topics would you cover? For example, if you had the chance, what would you ask @emilymbender or @timnitGebru to talk to your team about? #ethics #AI #noAI #learning #ArtificialIntelligence

  • @danbjoseph@floss.social I just got back from a 60 minute Q&A presentation (to a local retirement home, in this case). I always start such presentations with demystifying "AI" and explaining what language models are and why they seem so compelling --- and then just go to Q&A so I can meet people where they're at/speak to the main concerns that they have. @timnitGebru@dair-community.social

@danbjoseph@floss.social My shortlist is something like: 1. Here's why they're not what they seem/ so compelling 2. Here's how usage of these models will hollow out your organisational knowledge base (and what will happen to the org if that is allowed to happen) 3. Here's how the economics of the thing preclude the long term strategy being "Oh we just become wholly reliant on it" 4. Also, here's why (if you're a non-profit interested or positioned around a common good) this is fundamentally at odds with the moral standing of the organisation and the costs that would be involved from a reputational viewpoint. I actually did a keynote along the lines of 1, 3, and 4 last year. Lots of fun.

@danbjoseph@floss.social @emilymbender@dair-community.social @timnitGebru@dair-community.social I think presenting factual information such as the energy provided to run a single LLM query, or IP theft, could also be helpful.

@danbjoseph@floss.social @Em0nM4stodon@infosec.exchange @emilymbender@dair-community.social @timnitGebru@dair-community.social 1. The costs. Big AI is essentially trying to get people hooked with their equivalent of the drug-dealer’s “the first hit is free.” Will they plan for the cost to rise between ten and a hundredfold? 2. The impact on human capability. It has now been demonstrated in several areas that use of an “AI” tool in intellectual task performance triggers a decline in individual abilities (which I’d assume will get worse over time).
