Continuing the trend of "don't listen to the Internet" and "there are no bad Kirby games", Amazing Mirror is pretty great. It feels like an evolution of Kirby's Adventure, which was a bit of a dead-end since the series ultimately became more like Super Star. It gets called a metroidvania, but I think that's a misrepresentation and sets expectations that aren't going to be met. It is nonlinear but doesn't really have ability-based gating. There is some really neat stuff and clever level design. For example, this golem dude has 2 different copy abilities; you can get stone or fighter, depending on when you inhale him. A lot of complaints are about the map, but the complex ways areas connect and fit together is really masterful if you like navigation puzzles. Anyway, if you heard a game is bad, it is actually probably awesome. #kirby #gba #gameboyadvance #amazingmirror

@scribblemacher I loved this one so much growing up. Even if my cartridge was a bad reproduction and the battery didn't save anything so it was a fresh play every time I powered on the GBA. And that's not even getting into the super niche but cool multiplayer aspect where you could have up to four players each in their own sections of the map and can call everyone to one place with the phone. That's so cool!

@scribblemacher great game! The complex map was a bit frustrating for me as a kid but I did eventually beat the game!

  • @scribblemacher I'm reminded of how long so much of the Internet went along with the claim that Castlevania 2 was supposedly bad. I'd spent so much time on that game and had loved it so much, so I knew right then and there I couldn't trust the Internet as a whole to tell if something is good or bad. It sure does get tricky these days though. Especially since so many people seem to decide whether they like a game based on hype and graphics rather than the actual game.
