@decay It's enclosure and rent-seeking, not democratization.

@decay the only thing that has ever democratized programming is spreadsheets

@decay it was only a few months into 2022 when the discourse moved from “democratization” to “those artists enjoyed undue cachet” and thats when I realized it was alway about correcting their scales away from us heathens

@decay when "your" Code (Made from the AI) Throws an error ... YOU HAVE NO IDEA HOW TO FIXIT

@aiono@mastodon.social 2026-03-28 19:44
@decay this is very true. People who started learning coding with LLMs don't know how to write code manually. Because they never struggled and put in the time to internalize the syntax or the intuition about the program behavior. It's like reading exercise solutions instead of solving the exercises. This is not learning, it's just faking it.

@decay Wait! You learn something: not to use your brain. Humanity is doomed.

@decay the people who use LLMs don't care about programming, they care about the resulting software. So they would claim that it "democratizes creating software" or something.

@decay @ireneista I suspect that for significant portion of world population paying 20€ a month is simply impossible.

@decay Democratize in that you don’t need to work at leaning a skill? That is just dumbing it down.

@decay this argument seems to believe that programming forums are accessible for the average newbie poster.

@decay and that's not even mentioning a simple fact that programming with AI *costs money*. Writing code in an editor is free.

@amarok3@mastodon.social 2026-03-29 03:03
@decay democratizing would also mean making it free and independent. Anyone doing vibe coding is extremely dependent on expensive LLM services or hardware. No 4-year old can afford that. Nor can they bear the consequences of being dependent on rising prices that will come with it.

@decay Also WTF is up with using 'democratize' to mean 'make available more easily or less expensively'?

@decay @nuintari I think my stock response from now on is “LLMs don’t democratise programming, they privatise it”. Does getting all your code from a single provider make things more efficient? In the short term one can conceivably make that argument, although whether it’s true or not. Are they going to start over charging and making the service worse as soon as they control the market and the perception is that there’s no other option? You bet your socks they are.

@decay "LLMs democratize creativity, btw democracy doesn't work and we should fix it so only rich property owners can vote or hold office"
