@moonglum @gazebo_c also so many engineers who have always been cautious about introducing any new 3rd party dependency into a project are now suddenly all on board with having a black box introduce code with unknown (and unknowable) provenance.

@moonglum There has to be something more to the latter. Some kind of an "in order to". But I guess me not knowing just what the increased dependency offers in return shows which camp I'm in.

@moonglum Trying to see in which group I belong … user of Kagi, Forgejo, Firefox even 😂; but also into agentic coding, mainly to create nice-to-have features I’d never even have started without LLM assistance because of how much time it would have required. I'm not really feeling that it creates more *dependency* on Big Tech for me, though. Maybe free LLMs will even catch up at some point. And if not, and Big Tech agentic coding becomes no longer feasible … ok, back to “old-school” coding then.

@moonglum allow me to disagree a bit. One group is moving away from big tech and moving to other centralised non-US big tech. The other group is trying to federate a ‘new digital world’ by preferring and aiming for homegrown independent federated solutions. Quite comparable with when the banking crisis hit. Alan Greenspan promoted tons of small banks and some of those would incidentally go bust. The people and policy makers decided otherwise.

@moonglum @bert_hubert frontenders have been through this before. One group that went all in on javascript frameworks, one group that didn’t (preferring to rely on native browser capabilities). The first one got the upper hand. In a way also increasing usage of big tech as the biggest of these frameworks were created and pushed by Facebook (React), Google (Angular).

@moonglum I'm not sure if the second group is actively aiming to depend on big tech. Maybe they're simply falling in the "comfort trap". Maybe something along the lines of: "The tool makes life easier and more comfortable, do I need to think deeper and be conscious of what would happen if I use or support this tool? Nah. It gets the job done. Yay, I'm 10x dev now babee!" They might even be fully aware of the environmental impact, technical debt, security risks, data leak, etc.
