Why I Hate Working From Home https://larand.one/posts/why-i-hate-working-from-home

  • @larand@appdot.net Great points all around. My 1st WFH job was a disaster. (It was way back in the 90's--I was not in IT yet.) I didn't have a spare bedroom, and the absence of work/life boundaries was terrible for me. I never felt relaxed, except for the weekends. More recently, I started WFH full time around 2017. This time around, I had the privilege of a spare bedroom home office. It makes a big difference. (So far, I haven't had a "camera must be on" policy. That's a non-starter for me.)

@larand@appdot.net I agree with all of this. I will also add that loneliness definitely kicks in for me when I work remotely. For me, all of the downsides are outweighed by two benefits of remote work: 1. I get to live where I want; and 2. I get paid better than if I found an in-person job in the place where I want to live.

@larand@appdot.net I get the issues that come from not having a room you can dedicate to work (and where you could lock up your laptop at the end of the day). I don't have a good solution for that either. As for the "I'm a social being": You drove 100km each day. Not sure what traffic is like for you, but that's 1-2 hours per day alone in a metal box. Maybe there is a co-working space near you. Or you can walk to a coffee shop once every day. You get time back, use it! Time is our most precious resource.

@larand@appdot.net And just in case you don't already do this: draw a hard line between work and private. Don't log in to your private Instagram on the work laptop. Don't install Slack on your personal phone. If your work laptop is closed, people from work should have to actually call you or knock on your door. Keeping work off my phone did more for my mental work life separation than anything else I tried.
