They can feature a trans character/be about a trans person, a trans actor, or are written/produced/directed by a trans person. They can also be popularly-theorized to be transgender, such as Gwen Stacy in Into the Spider-Verse. (Note: "popular," here, means "made it into a news article") They can be in any language, and they can be short films. I'll take any genre, including historical, musicals/stage plays, and documentary/docudrama (regardless of their quality). I don't want any PragerU bullshit (using our genuine, real-life stories as Conservative propaganda). Other than that, I'll take any quality of movie/writing/depiction. (So, something like She's The Man or Emelia Perez would be okay under this ruleset, despite them both being, y'know, bad movies) Off the cuff, we already have: I Saw the TV GlowThe Matrix quadriologyThe Peoples Joker (i think we have some of Vera Drew's other projects)V for VendettaEternalsThe PrinceNimonaHellraiser (2022)(We also have the Spider-Verse movies) (i also have Tron, and have A Clockwork Orange on my to-do list, so Wendy Carlos gets in here too) My purpose for this is to make use of an external HDD, in order to have a dedicated backup. #transgender #trans #FilmRecs

@silverface@cyberpunk.lol I recommend Tokyo Godfathers, I'm definitely going back and forth on whether I think the portrayal of a trans woman is good, but it is ultimately a story with a lot of warmth and compassion.

  • @silverface@cyberpunk.lol there's a movie doing the festival circuit right now called She's The He that's supposed to get a wider release this year (https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/She%27s_the_He). And there's Bit, about a trans girl who falls in with a bunch of vampire women. For docs there's Will & Harper, by and about a friend and collaborator of Will Farrell's coming out process. And Chasing Chasing Amy about a trans guy's self discovery through the controversy around chasing amy.

@silverface@cyberpunk.lol @megmac@social.treehouse.systems It's very "movie of the week", but the Canadian film "Dawn, Her Dad, & the Tractor" hits both the featuring & about criteria. (It's about a trans woman going home to a father & brother that don't know she transitioned. It's a pleasant, low-stakes depiction of a trans coming out & family readjusting their relationships, although it doesn't go as deep as I"d like into the emotions & motivation for her isolating herself from them.) For your fan theory inclusion factor, I have been meaning to re-watch Titanic to see if it holds up under the interpretation that DiCaprio's character is a transman.

@silverface@cyberpunk.lol -Monty Python's Life of Brian (1979) has a trans woman character, Loretta, though she's not the focus character. (There's a scene where she comes out to her friends, and then she's gendered correctly for the rest of the movie.) -The Crying Game (1992) -M. Butterfly (1993) -To Wong Foo, Thanks for Everything, Julie Newmar (1995) -Mulan (1998) - She's not canonically transgender, but I believe it's a popular idea that Mulan could be a trans man. -Ace Ventura, Pet Detective (1994) -Silence of the Lambs (1991) (Some of these I don't like, and/or contain intense transphobia, but I have listed everything that comes to mind.)
