@BlackAzizAnansi Just read and loved “The Elementals” by Michael McDowell. Wrote the screenplays for Beetlejuice and Nightmare Before Christmas, but this is more serious writing about how weird old southern white families are. Most authentic I’ve ever felt to being an outsider to my Mississippi relatives (who we’re poorer but still considered themselves fallen aristocrats 🙄). Made me want to read the rest of his books; “The Amulet” is bleaker but also rules!

@splendorr @BlackAzizAnansi McDowell wrote some of the best horror of the late 70s/early 80s and is largely unsung for it. I whole-heartedly second any rec for The Elementals. Black Water is also very good. The Amulet has some issues, but it has a strong anti-war subtext. One that I read in the last couple years that keeps popping into my mind is Desert Creatures by Kay Cronister, post-collapse sci-fi horror, but better than a lot of other books I've read in that vein.
