@splendorr @BlackAzizAnansi McDowell wrote some of the best horror of the late 70s/early 80s and is largely unsung for it. I whole-heartedly second any rec for The Elementals. Black Water is also very good. The Amulet has some issues, but it has a strong anti-war subtext. One that I read in the last couple years that keeps popping into my mind is Desert Creatures by Kay Cronister, post-collapse sci-fi horror, but better than a lot of other books I've read in that vein.

@JustGrist @BlackAzizAnansi Totally agree that The Amulet is messy and has some nastiness. It felt like purging the worst of southern meanness and bigotry, but clearly had a lot of hurt and less consideration. Not a book I’d recommend easily! I also tried Cold Moon Over Babylon, and it made me so upset immediately that I shelved it for now. Just… focused on despair and cruelty. But I’m glad you liked Black Water! I’ll try it next. And I’ll take the rec for Cronister! 💜
