@smeg In my personal experience, the best option for native German speakers is to speak French with a really thick German accent and within two sentences they'll tell you in perfect accent-free German that they've lived half their life in Alsace and are currently working for a German company.

@smeg I have a friend who claimed he learned the best way to deal with snooty and uncooperative waiters in France was to yell at them in German.

@smeg I don't think this is as true as it used to be 25+ years ago. In recent trips to France, we found that just making even a crappy-but-earnest attempt to speak French almost always gets a response of "English is ok"

@smeg That's because they fear French speaking Dutch people. Watching Chateau Meiland, my ears almost started bleeding from the French with heavy Dutch accent 😭. I love both my neighbour Dutchmen and Frenchmen, but please don't butcher eachothers language 😆.

@smeg 16ya the tip Inwas given was to do the proper protocol ("good morning, mr/mrs, escuse me") and the ask if they sopke English, all that in French. It was a single phrase, and worked like ancharm all the time. At most fhey would say "non", but not get angry at you.
