@ploum @smeg In my (usually Parisian) experience, even if you try your best schoolboy French and be extra polite, they will look at you as if you're mad, then either ignore you or speak so fast you haven't a hope in hell of knowing what they're saying.

@ploum @smeg works pretty well if they can get to the level of Mitterand addressing the citizens on TV. Then my school-French suddenly was sufficient, unlike in random conversations in Paris

@ploum @smeg I lived 16y in France so far and I have never, ever heard a french person repeat louder and or slower, unless they knew me beforehand, and at work definitely never.
