In my (usually Parisian) experience, even if you try your best schoolboy French and be extra polite, they will look at you as if you're mad, then either ignore you or speak so fast you haven't a hope in hell of knowing what they're saying.

@Gillinger @ploum @smeg Yeah, but that is Paris. Some of my French acquaintances said that the Parisians are their own brand of arrogant. Usually more arrogant than the rest of the French. And that is saying something.
