The incarceration fear that organizes your thinking, the fear that has been used to justify surveilling, criminalizing, and caging generations of Black people, never organized theirs. The myth convinced them that there is no sacrifice too great. And then systems, institutions, and policies made sure the sacrifice would stay small enough to be worth it.

The misdirection was not accidental. The people who benefit most from the myth knew exactly what it would do to your attention. They knew that white folx committed to the story of Black criminality would not be asking questions about where the money went, who signed the executive order, or whose future just got sold. Brett Favre knew it too. He took public assistance funds meant for the poorest people in Mississippi and directed them toward a building those same people would never have access to
