The PM fumbling in the minute and labelling Grace Tame - survivor, advocate, past Australian of the Year, all round legend - as being &quot;difficult&quot; is whatever. Obviously not great, but I can forgive mis-speaking in the moment. The subsequent rubbish excuses of &quot;she has had a difficult life&quot; is extremely offensive. Women are not stupid. We know what it means to be called difficult. Most of us have been called difficult. We know what he meant, and it was not that she has had a difficult life. This is just another day in the patriarchy.

@michcampbell@fediscience.org Yes, as a woman who uses a powerwheelchair, I get called "difficult" when I politely ask drivers to move their parked car/truck off the footpath so that I can get past. "Difficult" means "how dare you, a woman, think that you have rights if those rights mean inconveniencing me, a man".

@michcampbell@fediscience.org I think the 'subsequent rubbish excuses' prove it wasn't a case of misspeaking - but in fact his internal voice unfiltered. Just another Catholic boy drenched in contempt for women.

@michcampbell@fediscience.org @sortius@infosec.exchange I haven’t watched the footage yet (I intend to to see if anyone laughed or otherwise expresssd approval), but the absolute lie of “intended meaning” and the non-apology (“If there was any misinterpretation, then I certainly apologise”?) was just out-of-your-fucking-mind jaw-dropping. I’m still bewildered by how ham-fisted and wrong-footed it was. There are many Australian men who will take this as permission to continue to deride women who demand better in their life. Who will interpret the explanation and apology as a “wink, wink, been caught by the missus but we all know what I really meant, wink, wink” type response. Gah!
