I fondly remember my immediate reaction when I saw that first webpage:
"Why would anyone use this when there are perfectly good gopher servers out there?"

We were having a discussion about what we should use for our campus information system. We felt that Gopher was not so user friendly, and the world wide web was just too new. So we decided to develop something ourselves. Sigh. Needless to say, that project never really got off the ground as everything rapidly shifted to HTML and the web.
