When I was young a very long time ago, I would have said Ginger Baker. Then I started listening more to folk and folk-rock, and my favorite drummer was Dave Mattacks. Nowadays? Probably Michael Jerome.

I figure every 20something garage band figures this out really fast--the drummer can make or break your sound. I'm not deeply in this world, but even from the edges I see that good drummers are constantly swamped with requests for collaboration, more than singers, guitarists, or even bassists. Related: one of my favorite books is Taft, by Ann Patchett, about a blues drummer.
